Why Is My Bladder Burning

Urinary Tract Infections : More Common In Women

What are the causes of burning sensation with urination?-Dr. Manohar T

Urinary tract infections, sometimes called bladder infections, strike women more often than men, and simple anatomy is the cause.

The female urethra is closer to areas that have natural bacteria, such as the anus and vagina. Its also shorter than a mans urethra, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases .

Bladder pain from UTIs can happen at any age. In young women, it is a common symptom of urinary tract infections, along with frequent and painful urination. Symptoms in older women can vary but typically include muscle aches, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weakness.

Its important to see your doctor because treatment with antibiotics like Macrobid or Bactrim can usually clear up a urinary tract infection, the NIDDK notes.

And though the infection may go away without treatment, antibiotics can speed healing and quickly eliminate uncomfortable symptoms. Drinking extra fluids and urinating frequently will also help treat the infection and your discomfort.

Vaginitis, or inflammation of the vagina, can also cause painful urination. Vaginitis can be caused by an allergic reaction to chemicals , low levels of estrogen, yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, or the sexually transmitted infection trichomoniasis.

Urethritis, or inflammation of the urethra, can also cause painful urination. Causes typically include sexually transmitted infections, like gonorrhea and chlamydia, a reaction to irritating chemicals, or irritation from the insertion of a catheter.

Causes of dysuria can also vary by gender. Women often experience dysuria with:

  • Irritation of vaginal tissue

Contact your childs doctor if you notice any of these symptoms:

  • Painful urination lasts for more than three days
  • Fever
  • Redness or rash in genital area
  • Discharge from penis or vagina
  • Bloody, cloudy, or smelly urine

Localized trauma from sexual abuse can also cause painful urination. If you have concerns about child abuse, talk to your childs doctor. You can also report the abuse to the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-4-A-CHILD .

I thought I had a UTI when I was out of town. My dr. called me out Bactrim and I did not get any relief. 3 days later I developed fever of 103 and the dr. did a UA and it showed moderate blood and some epithelial cells. Another antibiotic and the fever went away but urethra is still burning. It burns after I pee not during. The burning after urination lasts all day. I had a cystoscope done and nothing was found. Any ideas?

Why Is Pee Foamy

You might be more likely to have foamy urine if you have a full bladder, which can make your urine stream more forceful and faster. The urine can also get foamy if its more concentrated, which can occur due to dehydration or pregnancy. Protein in the urine can also cause foaminess and is usually due to kidney disease.

Myth: Drinking Less Is Best

Why do I have burning urine and pain in my testicles?

Waving off the waiter when they try to refill your glass may help a little. But doctors say a healthy bladder should be able to handle a normal amount of fluid. You might want to think more about what you drink. Caffeine is a bladder stimulant. Consider downsizing that morning cup of joe or skipping the cola.

Urinary Incontinence And Vaginal/perineal Skin Irritation

The urethra in women lies just beneath the clitoris, and above the vaginal opening. Urinary incontinence, the involuntary loss of urine, can occur with activities such as exercise, sex, coughing, sneezing, and laughing, and can also occur with uncontrolled urge to urinate/overactive bladder. Sometimes it can be just a drop or two, requiring no more than a change of underwear, but in some women, it can be significant, leading to use of liners or pads. The pads, whether dry or wet with urine, can themselves irritate sensitive vaginal and perineal skin. Simple urine contact with vaginal and perineal skin, when chronic, can lead to dermatitis, skin irritation and infection.

What Are The Treatment Options For Painful Urination

Determining the cause of the pain will be the first step before treatment.

Your doctor may prescribe medication to treat painful urination. Antibiotics can treat UTIs, some bacterial infections, and some STIs. Your doctor may also give you medication to calm your irritated bladder.

Painful urination due to a bacterial infection usually improves fairly quickly after you start taking medication. Always take the medication exactly as your doctor prescribes.

Pain associated with some infections, such as interstitial cystitis, may be more challenging to treat. Results from drug therapy may be slower. You may have to take medication for up to 4 months before you start to feel better.

There are changes you can make to your lifestyle to help relieve your symptoms.

  • Steer clear of scented laundry detergents and toiletries to reduce your risk of irritation.

What About Conventional Medicines

WHY IS MY URINARY TRACT BURNING? UTI

Conventional medicines can be used to relieve symptoms of pain or burning when passing urine. Often a doctor would recommend treating the symptoms at home or with over-the-counter medicines. For example, you can try painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

If symptoms of burning persist for more than 4 days, then it is important to go to your doctor. This is an indication that your body is struggling to fight off the infection, and you will probably need antibiotics to clear the cystitis.

Causes And Risk Factors Of Utis

Common risk factors for urinary tract infection in women include:

  • Sexual activity: You are at an increased risk for urinary tract infections from intercourse and even your birth control, according to Mann. A diaphragm, spermicide and some vaginal lubricants can change the bacterial makeup of the vagina, leading to increased risk of UTI for some women.
  • Immune system suppression: Chronic or acute illnesses can weaken the bodys immune system and defense against bacteria, leaving you vulnerable to a UTI,says Mann.
  • Voiding dysfunction: Conditions that make it hard to completely empty the bladder can raise the risk of a urinary tract infection. These include spinal cord injury or neuropathy, a condition that affects nerve function.
  • Menopause: Mann explains that during menopause your bodys pH levels change, which alters the vaginas bacterial flora . This change in bacterial makeup increases your risk of UTI.

Supportive Therapies And Treatments

Some people also find the following therapies and supportive treatments helpful:

  • physiotherapy massaging the pelvic floor muscles may help reduce any strain on your bladder
  • bladder retraining where you gradually learn to be able to hold more pee in your bladder before needing to go to the toilet
  • psychological therapy to help you cope with your symptoms and their impact on your life
  • transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation where a small battery-operated device is used to relieve pain by sending electrical impulses into your body
