Burning And Bleeding After Urination

15 of Symptoms of a Bladder Infection Never to Ignore

Q1. A few nights ago I was urinating and I suddenly felt as if something came into my penis and caused a really bad burning sensation. When I finished urinating, I noticed that I was bleeding. My doctor prescribed antibiotics, and the bleeding and burning sensation were reduced, but now the symptoms seem to be coming back. Do you have any thoughts about what this could be and how I should proceed with treatment?

Arsalan, California

What you are describing is called terminal hematuria, or bleeding at the end of the urinary stream. Antibiotics are appropriate if the bleeding and burning are caused by a urinary tract infection. Some urinary infections, including bladder infections, prostate infections, and urethritis , can lead to blood in the urine or at the tip of the urethra. Recurrence of this symptom should make the treating physician suspicious that either the bleeding is not due to an infection, the infection was incompletely treated, or the same or another organism has caused a recurrent infection.

Q2. I am a 25-year-old healthy male. During a recent visit to the urologist, a trace amount of blood was found in my urine, but no signs of infection. I can’t see any blood myself when I go to the bathroom. The doctor sent me to get a CT scan, and everything came back normal. I’m really worried about something worse being the cause. Should I be? Or can blood just show up in the urine from time to time?

How Do I Prevent Utis

Among healthy young women who have their first UTI, 25% will have a recurrence within 6 months. In some cases this represents relapse of the same infection, while other cases are new infections. Women in either case are generally retreated with good results.

Women who have a long history of recurrent UTIs can be offered prophylaxis: In this case, antibiotics are used to prevent UTIs, rather than waiting for them to occur. Several regimens have been used successfully. Since UTIs are commonly related to sexual activity, one very effective regimen involves taking a single dose of antibiotic with every sexual encounter. Other regimens, including daily doses of antibiotics, are occasionally necessary.

In people with GN, the injured kidneys are unable to remove waste and excess fluid from the body. Without treatment, GN can lead to kidney failure.

Chronic GN often occurs in young men who also have hearing and vision loss.

Acute GN comes on suddenly and may cause the following symptoms:

Do I Have A Complicated Urinary Tract Infection? | DxTx
  • Bleeding from the bladder is not a normal occurrence. It should alert you that there is a malfunction of the urinary tract. Calcified stones, infection, or cancer may be the causes of cystitis bleeding. Any blood in the urine should be investigated for its underlying cause as soon as possible.
  • If there is excruciating pain while voiding too, and you have some nausea, there may be a buildup of calcified stones blocking or moving through the urinary tract.
  • If fever and chills are present and extreme itching is associated with the symptoms, perhaps a bladder infection is in process.
  • Either way, start drinking water to hydrate your body and start flushing the system to remove toxins and facilitate the passage of any blockages.
  • You can literally poison your body by being dehydrated and not urinating adequate amounts.

Kidney And Bladder Stones

If the blood contains too little liquid and too much waste, the waste products can bind with chemicals in the urine, forming hard stones in the kidneys or bladder.

Often, the stones are small enough to pass through urination. Larger stones may remain in the kidney or bladder or get stuck elsewhere in the urinary tract.

Larger stones generally cause more noticeable symptoms, such as:

  • blood in the urine
  • cloudy or strong-smelling urine

What Causes Bladder Infections

All urinary tract infections are the result of interactions between the infecting organism , the number of organisms that are present in the bladder, and the bodyâs ability to fight off the organism .

The most common way bacteria gain access to the urinary system from the outside is through the urethra .

  • The most common source of bacteria that cause UTIs is stool.
  • In women, the bacteria from the stool travel first to the vagina and then enter the urethra.
  • Sometimes bacteria may enter the bladder via the urethra from nearby skin.
  • In general, women are more susceptible to bladder infections due to their shorter length of the urethra.
  • In the first year of life, boys have a higher risk of UTIs, but thereafter girls have a higher risk that persists in adulthood.
  • Increasing age is a risk factor for UTIs.

In terms of specific bacteria, E. coli is by far the most common organism responsible for bladder infection or cystitis. Staphylococcal organisms and other gut bacteria are other bacteria that can cause cystitis and other forms of urinary infections. The type of organism causing the infection can vary with the individualâs age. For example, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, a skin bacteria, causes approximately 10% of symptomatic bladder infections in young sexually active women, whereas it rarely causes bladder infections in males and elderly individuals.

Outlook For Hemorrhagic Cystitis

Your outlook depends on the stage and the cause. HC from infection has a good outlook. Many people with infectious HC respond to treatment and dont have long-term problems.

HC from cancer treatment can have a different outlook. Symptoms may start weeks, months, or years after treatment and may be long-lasting.

There are many treatment options for HC caused by radiation or chemotherapy. In most cases, HC will respond to treatment, and your symptoms will improve after cancer therapy.

If other treatments dont work, cystectomy can cure HC. After cystectomy, there are options for reconstructive surgery to restore urine flow. Keep in mind that needing cystectomy for HC is very rare.

Are There Other Conditions That May Seem Like A Uti

We encourage women with urinary symptoms to be seen in the office to confirm the diagnosis. Urinary infections are sometimes mistaken for other conditions and vice-versa. Conditions that cause similar conditions include:

  • Vaginal infections are usually characterized by discharge, irritation, itching, and/or odor, but burning on urination is occasionally the only symptom.
  • Genital herpes can cause burning with urination.
  • Ovarian cysts can cause lower abdominal pain.
  • Bladder stones can sometimes cause blood in the urine.

With the exception of women who have already had numerous culture-proven UTIs, women who have symptoms suggesting a UTI should be seen in the office to rule out other causes for their symptoms.

What Is A Bladder Infection

How do you know you have a bladder infection? | Urinary Tract Infection Symptoms

Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder. Most cystitis is from bacterial infections involving the bladder and less commonly may be due to other infectious diseases, including yeast infections, viral infections, or the result of other causes such as chemical irritants of the bladder, or for unknown reasons . Bladder infection is a type of urinary tract infection . Other forms of urinary tract infection include pyelonephritis , urethritis , and prostatitis . This review will specifically address infectious cystitis.

The urine in the bladder is normally free of bacteria . However, bacteria may be present in the bladder but not cause inflammation or symptoms of an infection.

  • This is asymptomatic bacteriuria, not cystitis.
  • Asymptomatic bacteriuria is bacteria in the urine that does not cause symptoms.
  • It is important to differentiate asymptomatic bacteriuria from cystitis, to prevent overuse of antibiotics.
  • Most people with asymptomatic bacteriuria do not require antibiotics.
  • In fact, the guidelines for the Infectious Disease Society of America recommend only treating asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant women or immediately before urologic procedures.

Are Home Remedies Effective For A Bladder Infection

People have used cranberry products to prevent bladder infections. Cranberries contain a substance that can prevent bacteria from sticking on the walls of the bladder. A Cochrane Database systematic review of cranberries for preventing UTIs in 2012 concluded that the evidence for cranberry products, particularly cranberry juice, over the long term is small and that cranberry juice could not be recommended at that time for the prevention of UTIs. Further studies need to evaluate other cranberry preparations.

Probiotics are preparations that contain live bacteria, for example, lactobacillus, that can prevent other bacteria from growing and moving up from the bladder to the kidney. The probiotic decreases the ability of the infecting bacteria from sticking to the bladder and growing and may also affect the ability of the individual’s own body to fight off bacteria. A Cochrane Database review in 2015 demonstrated no significant difference in the risks of recurrent UTIs for probiotics compared with placebo or antibiotic prophylaxis in either women or children, however, there were a limited number of good-quality studies.

Adhering to the prescribed antibiotic regimen and staying well hydrated are essential components of home remedies for bladder infection.

Hpv And Cervical Cancer

Intermenstrual bleeding can be a sign of more serious problems, such as cervical or endometrial cancer, and for this reason I would advise that if you are having intermenstrual bleeding, or any other new or worrying symptoms, see your doctor even if its only for a bit of reassurance.

Cervical cancer is very often caused by the human papilloma virus infection, which is a sexually transmitted virus. There are around 100 different types of the virus, some of which can cause genital warts, some of which can cause cervical cancer, and some of which dont do much at all. Lots of people, both men and women, have HPV at some point in their life and often the body gets rid of the virus, just like it fights off the common cold.

Having a high-risk strain of HPV for a period of time can increase the risk of the cells in the cervix becoming cancerous. The virus itself cant be treated, but its effects can genital warts can be treated in a number of ways, and pre-cancerous changes in the cervix can be picked up by a smear test and treated before they become cancer. Like all tests, its not fool-proof, and intermenstrual bleeding should still prompt a visit to the doctor, even if you have had regular, normal smear tests. 4
