Keep Your Toilet Area Clean

How to Better Empty My Bladder

Remember:

  • When done urinating, always wipe from front to back. Make sure you do not use scented toilet paper or use those toilet paper holders that have a freshener or deodorizer inside
  • Menif you see dribbles, blotdon’t wipe.
  • Always wash your hands after using the toilet.
  • If your toilet is stained with Pyridium-laced urine, spray with Lysol or another brand name of bleach. Cover up the toilet paper roll and your hand towels to avoid getting the Lysol spray on them. You would be surprised to see how far powders and aerosol sprays travel onto the very items you are trying to keep free of scents.

These tips will keep the area around your toilet from becoming contaminated with scents. It is just as important to be careful with cleaning these areas as it is to use scent-free toilet paper.

If you use dusting powder or body sprays, I strongly advise you to stop using them. But, if you must, make sure you have underwear on and pulled up, so no powder can find its way inside the pants. Body sprays have no business being sprayed in the genital region, and they will hinder all that hard work you are doing in trying to get well.

If you use body wash in the shower, make sure your genital region is the last place you thoroughly rinse before getting out of the shower. Change the body wash puff at least once a month to avoid accumulating and spreading bacteria.

Risk Factors For Developing Utis

Some people are at greater risk than others of developing UTIs. These include:

  • women sexually active women are vulnerable, in part because the urethra is only four centimetres long and bacteria have only this short distance to travel from the outside to the inside of the bladder
  • people with urinary catheters such as people who are critically ill, who cant empty their own bladder
  • people with diabetes changes to the immune system make a person with diabetes more vulnerable to infection
  • men with prostate problems such as an enlarged prostate gland that can cause the bladder to only partially empty
  • babies especially those born with physical problems of the urinary system.

Ask For Spasm Relieving Medication

When you visit your doctor, its worth taking your time there to ask about other medications that can help with painful symptoms that antibiotics may not be able to treat. One being bladder spasms, which occur when your bladder muscles contract or tighten. These contractions can become painful and cause a constant urge to urinate. Let your doctor know that your infection and bladder spasms are causing urinary urgency that keeps you awake during the night. You could be prescribed with medication to relieve the feelings of pain and urgency that are disturbing your sleep.

If you arent prescribed any, you can also ask your doctor about taking over-the-counter medications like phenazopyridine or Azo-Standard, which can help relieve bladder spasms, urgency, and pain. These medications have few side effects and work for most people, but they will turn your urine red or orange when taken.

Pain Relief Medication For Urinary Tract Infections

15 of Symptoms of a Bladder Infection Never to Ignore

Phenazopyridine is the go-to pain reliever for UTIs, as it is specifically formulated to ease the most common urinary symptoms, including:

  • Pain
  • Irritation
  • The frequent urge to urinate

It is and unapproved medication that is available over the counter or in prescription form. It comes in several brand names and generic options.

Phenazopyridine is not an antibiotic, and it is only used for symptom relief. It will not help cure the infection. Its typically taken 3 times per day after each meal with a large glass of water. The medicine may discolor your urine temporarily to a brownish-red color, but this is a harmless side effect.

Evidence is lacking that taking phenazopyridine and an antibacterial is more beneficial than just the antibacterial by itself after two days. Therefore, phenazopyridine should not be taken for longer than two days when youre taking an antibacterial simultaneously.

Other over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can also help alleviate urinary tract pain symptoms, as well as full-body symptoms such as fever. If you are taking an antibiotic, your healthcare provider or pharmacist can help you choose the best analgesic option that wont interact with your antibiotic.

What’s The Difference Between A Bladder Infection And Uti

As the name suggest, a urinary tract infection affects your urinary tract, which is made up of two kidneys, two ureters, a bladder, and a urethra, according to the US National Library of Medicine . A UTI happens when bacteria get into the urethra and begin multiplying. Most commonly, it’s a strain of bacteria called Escherichia coli , which normally lives in the intestines and anus .

Once the bacteria makes its way into your urethra, anywhere in your urinary tracts becomes fair game for an infection. If the bacteria infect your urethra, for example, it’s called urethritis if it makes its way to your ureters or kidneys, it’s called pyelonephiritis.

The most common type of a UTI, however, is a bladder infection , according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . In fact, “a bladder infection is what most people think of when they hear about a UTIthat’s the easiest way to interpret a bladder infection,”Michael Herman, MD, urologist and director of urologic oncology at Mount Sinai South Nassau, tells Health.

Understanding Urinary Retention In Pregnancy

For many women, making lots of trips to the bathroom is one of the first signs of pregnancy. In fact, during pregnancy, your urinary system undergoes some major changes. For instance, the pregnancy hormones coursing through your system stimulate your kidneys to expand and produce more urine, which helps your body get rid of extra waste more quickly.

Meanwhile, your expanding uterus also presses on your bladdereven when your baby is tiny. This should not surprise you though. After all, your uterus begins as the size of a fist but grows to accommodate a 7 to 10-pound baby. Then as your baby grows, the baby’s weight also may press on your bladder making you have to go to the bathroom much more often. But what happens when you cannot pee? Is urinary retention cause for alarm?

UTIs. Urine is normally sterile, and the normal flow of urine usually prevents bacteria from infecting the urinary tract. With urinary retention, the abnormal urine flow gives bacteria at the opening of the urethra a chance to infect the urinary tract.

Bladder damage. If the bladder becomes stretched too far or for long periods, the muscles may be permanently damaged and lose their ability to contract.

Kidney damage. In some people, urinary retention causes urine to flow backward into the kidneys. This backward flow, called reflux, may damage or scar the kidneys.

Urinary incontinence after prostate, tumor, or cancer surgery. Transurethral surgery to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia may result in urinary incontinence in some men. This problem is often temporary. Most men recover their bladder control in a few weeks or months after surgery. Surgery to remove tumors or cancerous tissue in the bladder, prostate, or urethra may also result in urinary incontinence.

What Are The Treatments For A Bladder Infection Vs A Uti

How a doctor deals with a patient’s UTI depends on where it’s located, what caused it, how severe the infection is, and whether there are other complicating factors to consider.

An uncomplicated bladder infection can sometimes clear up on its own. But given that it can turn into a more severe infection, you might be better off with a prescription for some oral antibiotics to kill off the bacteria. Per the American Urological Association , treatment for uncomplicated bladder infections typically involves taking one of the following:

  • A single dose of Fosfomycin.
  • Nitrofurantoin for five days.
  • Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole DS for three days.

If you have a more complicated bladder infection, you may need to rely on other types of antibiotics and take them for up to 14 days to clear out the infection. Either way, you should start to feel better within a couple of days of taking the meds but be sure to finish the full course of antibiotics. Otherwise, resistant bacteria could grow and create a new infection that’s harder to cure.

Doctors may also give you additional fluids through the IV. And that’s assuming you don’t get a complication, such as sepsis. Once the IV antibiotics help you feel better, you can generally go home and finish treating the UTI with more antibiotics for a total of 14 days, per the AUA.

Take A Baking Soda Bath

Also known as a sitz bath, this type of bath is great for helping ease the discomfort of a UTI, and it may help remove bacteria and odors as well. To do so, simply add ¼ cup of baking soda to your warm bath water and soak for 15 to 30 minutes. Although a baking soda bath will not change the acidity of the urine, it can relieve the pain and offer therapeutic properties of a regular bath which can help you relax and sleep better as a result.

A while back during a particularly bad UTI I found that Sitz Bath Soak worked even better than just using baking soda alone. I still keep some in the cabinet in preparation for a future UTI.
