What Causes Bladder Wall Thickening

Bladder wall thickening is a common symptom of many diseases. Most commonly it occurs with benign tumors such as cysts, polyps or masses. However, it may also occur in some cancers such as leukemia and lymphomas .

The cause of bladder wall thickening is not known but there are several theories. One theory suggests that it is due to the presence of abnormal cells called microcarcinogens in the body.

These bacteria produce toxins which damage normal tissue. Another theory suggests that it is due to the presence of certain hormones in the blood stream causing inflammation. Other possible reasons include infection, hormonal imbalance, injury and other conditions.

Symptoms of Bladder Wall Thickening:

A lumpy appearance of the skin around your groin area or lower abdomen . This condition may affect both men and women.

The lumpiness usually begins at birth and becomes worse over time.

Pain may or may not occur.

Blood in the urine is very rare. In some cases, there may be no symptoms at all.

If it is a true cyst then it will be separate from the actual bladder wall cysts which are attached to the skin are more likely to be other types of growths such as genital warts.

Weird smells from the urine or skin are rare.

There may be no symptoms at all.

How Is Interstitial Cystitis Diagnosed

Diagnosing interstitial cystitis typically isnt a simple process. There isnt any single medical test that can definitively diagnose IC, or rule it out.

To diagnose IC, your doctor will consider your symptoms and medical history, and perform a physical and neurological exam. Your doctor may also give you a questionnaire about bladder or pelvic pain.

Your doctor may also order or administer other tests to help diagnose IC, or to rule out other health conditions. These tests may include:

Urine tests Simple tests of a urine sample can rule out other conditions by detecting signs of an active infection or blood in your urine.

Ultrasound of bladder This noninvasive test allows doctors to see the shape and structure of your bladder, as well as how well you empty it after urination.

Urodynamic evaluation This test involves filling your bladder with water through a catheter to measure pressure as it fills and empties.

Cystoscopy This procedure involves inserting a specialized viewing instrument into your bladder to look for ulcers caused by IC, or other problems, such as a tumor.

Whats Usually The First Symptom Of Bladder Cancer

Blood in your pee is the most common bladder cancer symptom. That said, simply having blood in your pee isnt a sure sign of bladder cancer. Other conditions cause this issue, too. But you should contact a healthcare provider whenever you spot blood in your pee. Other bladder cancer symptoms include:

• Visible blood in your pee : Healthcare providers can also spot microscopic amounts of blood in pee when they do a urinalysis.
• Pain when you pee : This is a burning or stinging sensation that you may feel when you start to pee or after you pee. Men and DMAB may have pain in their penises before or after peeing.
• Needing to pee a lot: Frequent urination means youre peeing many times during a 24-hour period.
• Having trouble peeing: The flow of your pee may start and stop or the flow may not be as strong as usual.
• Persistent bladder infections: Bladder infections and bladder cancer symptoms have common symptoms. Contact your healthcare provider if you have a bladder infection that doesnt go away after treatment with antibiotics.

Treatment Of Feline Idiopathic Cystitis

Because the cause of FIC is unknown, theres no medication that directly treats it. The most important aspect of managing FIC is to ease your cats discomfort. Your vet might prescribe pain relievers such as butorphanol or buprenorphine, which are low-dose opioids. Gabapentin is a drug in a different class that may also be used to control pain.

If your cats urethra is blocked, it will require much more extensive treatment. After the initial emergent treatment, some of the medications your vet might prescribe include, but are not limited to acepromazine, prazosin or phenoxybenzamine, which are medications designed to help the urethra relax. Unfortunately, one of the main causes of the blockage is inflammation, and these medications dont address the underlying inflammation.

Given that inflammation is a big part of FIC, you might assume that your vet would advise taking a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug like meloxicam. Unfortunately, no studies have demonstrated that NSAIDs help with FIC.

Symptoms Of Feline Idiopathic Cystitis

Common symptoms of FIC may include:

• Straining to urinate

• Urinating more often

• Urinating smaller amounts more frequently

• Blood in the urine

• Urinating outside the litter box, especially on cool, smooth surfaces such as tile or hardwood floors

• Licking excessively at the genital region

• Crying out or meowing while urinating

• Vomiting or diarrhea

If your cats urethra has become obstructed , they will produce little to no urine and cry out often. They also will likely exhibit many of the other signs listed above. This is a medical emergency. Please seek veterinary care immediately.

What Are The Treatment Options

Treating a thickened bladder wall means treating the underlying condition that caused the change in the wall.

For example, UTI treatment usually involves a course of antibiotic therapy. To prevent UTIs, practice good hygiene. Wipe front to back to reduce the risk of germs from the rectum reaching the urethra.

Surgery can remove noncancerous tumors that are causing you symptoms. The tumors usually wont recur.

Cancerous growths can sometimes be removed with surgery, too. Additional cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation, may also be necessary.

Prostate treatment is a somewhat controversial subject. Prostate surgery can sometimes lead to incontinence or erectile dysfunction. If prostate symptoms are minor, your doctor may recommend a watch-and-wait approach to monitor your prostate regularly. Prostate cancer is often a slow-growing cancer. This means aggressive treatment isnt always best.

If excess bladder emptying due to urge incontinence is a problem, your doctor may recommend anticholinergic drugs. These medications relax the detrusor muscle of the bladder.

If urinary retention is occurring due to BOO, your doctor may prescribe medication, such as tamsulosin, to help your urine flow be stronger.

Urgency Or Difficulty Urinating

A bladder disorder can make it difficult to fully empty your bladder. This can cause frequent urination, feeling like you always have to urinate, or both.

When the bladder wall thickens, the bladder may not be able to hold as much urine as it normally does. This can create those urgent feelings of having to urinate more frequently. BOO can also make it harder to urinate.

Causes Of Bladder Trabeculation

The bladder is a hollow, triangle-shaped organ in your lower abdomen. Other organs and ligaments attached to the bones in your pelvis hold it in place. Your bladder walls typically expand to store urine, then contract to push urine out through your urethra and expel it from your body.

When something blocks the urethra, like a kidney stone, it can slow down or stop urine from getting out. Your bladder walls must work harder as your bladder tries to force out urine. This causes the bladder walls to thicken. That thickening of the bladder walls is called trabeculation.

When your bladder walls get too thick, they lose the ability to expand and contract, making it hard for your body to expel urine.

Bladder trabeculation can be caused by other health conditions, such as blood clots. People who have blood clots may have trouble urinating when the clots harden. This puts pressure on the bladder walls, causing them to thicken. â

Bladder trabeculation in children. Bladder trabeculation in children can be caused by congenital bladder conditions . Certain valves within the urethra can narrow or block the ureter or urethra, causing bladder trabeculation.

Bladder Cancer Is A Disease In Which Malignant Cells Form In The Tissues Of The Bladder

The bladder is a hollow organ in the lower part of the abdomen. It is shaped like a small balloon and has a muscular wall that allows it to get larger or smaller to store urine made by the kidneys. There are two kidneys, one on each side of the backbone, above the waist. Tiny tubules in the kidneys filter and clean the blood. They take out waste products and make urine. The urine passes from each kidney through a long tube called a ureter into the bladder. The bladder holds the urine until it passes through the urethra and leaves the body.

There are three types of bladder cancer that begin in cells in the lining of the bladder. These cancers are named for the type of cells that become malignant :

• High-grade transitional cell carcinoma often recurs after treatment and often spreads into the muscle layer of the bladder, to other parts of the body, and to lymph nodes. Almost all deaths from bladder cancer are due to high-grade disease.

Duration Of Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial cystitis isnt considered a curable condition. Instead, treatment for IC is aimed at reducing the burden of symptoms.

Even if you experience an absence of IC symptoms for a period of time which may last weeks, months, or even longer you arent considered cured. Instead, youre considered to be in remission.

While people with interstitial cystitis are typically thought to have the condition for the rest of their lives, that doesnt mean you should resign yourself to pain, discomfort, and disruption. With treatment, most people with IC can significantly improve their condition.

Causes And Risk Factors Of Interstitial Cystitis

Doctors don’t know the exact cause of interstitial cystitis, but many researchers believe that it is initially triggered by damage to the bladder lining.

In a study published in September 2017 in the journal BMC Chemistry, researchers found that many people with IC produce a protein, called antiproliferative factor, that makes the bladder sensitive to urine.

This protein prevents the growth of bladder cells, so it may prevent the bladder from healing itself when damage occurs.

Many researchers believe that IC may develop for a number of different reasons, such as the following:

Damage to the bladder Surgery or other types of trauma may damage the bladder, contributing to this condition.

Bladder distention The inability to empty your bladder for long periods of time has been associated with interstitial cystitis.

Bladder Wall Thickening In Men And Women

The underlying causes of a thickened bladder wall can differ between men and women.

BOO is more common among men, because its often linked to prostate problems. An enlarged prostate forces the bladder to work harder to empty itself of urine. This in turn causes the bladder wall to thicken. Prostate treatment can help reduce the burden on the bladder.

UTIs are more common among women. Thorough treatment can ease the strain on the bladder and allow thickened bladder walls to return to normal.

How Is Cystitis Diagnosed

A history of hematuria, dysuria, and pollakiuria is strong evidence of some form of cystitis. When any or all of these signs are seen, several tests are appropriate.

The first group of tests includes urinalysis, urine culture, and bladder palpation .

A urinalysis consists of several tests to detect abnormalities in the urine and urine sediment. These are generally adequate to confirm cystitis, but they may not tell us the exact cause.

Urine culture and sensitivity determines if bacteria are present and what antibiotics are likely to be effective in killing them. This is often indicated, because bacteria cause most cases of cystitis in dogs and are usually eliminated easily with the appropriate antibiotic.

Bladder palpation is the first diagnostic test for bladder stones, since stones may be large enough to be felt by your veterinarian.
