How Do You Prevent Bladder Infections In Dogs
Whether you have a pet dog or are a dog owner yourself, you probably want to learn how to prevent bladder infections in dogs from holding their urine too long. These infections can occur in dogs and humans alike, and can be embarrassing and even painful. Fortunately, there are many ways to treat and prevent bladder infections in dogs. By following a few simple rules, you can help your pet have a healthy urinary tract.
First, remember that bacteria build up in the bladder, which is why dogs get urinary tract infections in the first place. This bacterial buildup, which is normally present in the urethra, multiplies quickly and forms a urinary tract infection, or UTI. If your dog holds their pee for too long, it could lead to stones, which need to be removed through surgery or a special diet.
How Your Bladder Works
The bladder is a muscle that sits in the pelvis. Its connected to your kidneys by two small tubes, called ureters. The kidneys filter waste out of your blood and pass the leftover liquid through the ureters into your bladder. From there, waste is expelled as urine from your body through a tube called the urethra. Theres an internal sphincter, or valve, between your bladder and urethra to prevent leakage and backflow. When your brain gives the signal to urinate, the sphincter opens and you pee.
Health Risks Of Holding Urine
In most cases, holding in urine for a short period of time until there is a time and place to go is not going to be harmful. However, holding in urine is associated with a small increased risk of urinary tract infections. This is because the urine standing in the bladder can increase the bacteria growth there. Taking in a lot of fluids and voiding them regularly is the best way to avoid this bacteria overgrowth, which may lead to an infection.

Diet Vitamins And Minerals
Diet can also be a factor. The color of all-natural foods can interact with pigment to create a different color. Heavily processed foods can contain high amounts of food dye. This dye will interact with the pigment as well.
B vitamins, such as riboflavin and cobalamin , are also known for causing fluorescent yellow-green urine. If you take supplements or multivitamins, they may be the source of your brightly colored urine.
Meal replacement shakes, which are also fortified with B vitamins, can have the same effect.
Excess beta carotene or vitamin C may lead to urine thats dark yellow or orange. Beta carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in the body, is found in yellow and orange foods such as carrots and sweet potatoes.
How Much Fluid Does The Bladder Hold
While the human bladder typically holds between 1.5 and 2 cups of fluid, 1 the perception of feeling full varies from person to person. How fast the bladder fills depends on a number of factors, and therefore, theres no hard and fast rule about how long people can go between bathroom trips. In most cases, however, people can go

Why Holding Your Urine Is Detrimental
We’ve all held it to the point where we think we won’t make it to the restroom. Aside from the temporary discomfort, this bad habit can wreak havoc on your urinary health if you keep it up.
Weakens Your Bladder Muscles
Although bladder training is a technique used to help those suffering from urinary incontinence to build strength in their bladder, holding your pee for too long can actually cause incontinence. This is because holding your urine for long periods strains your bladder muscles over time. It can also cause you to have trouble completely emptying your bladder.
Causes Urinary tract Infections
Although holding your pee doesnt directly cause a urinary tract infection , not emptying your bladder can allow bacteria to multiply within the bladder. This is because passing urine helps to flush out the bladder and the rest of your urinary tract.
This is also true if you dont drink enough water since you wont have enough liquid in your system to passthis also gives bacteria the opportunity to multiply and cause an infection.
Increases Risk for Kidney Disease
Although holding your pee can be relatively safe for those with a healthy urinary tract and system, it can be detrimental for those living with existing health conditions. In fact, having the following health conditions and holding your urine for long periods can result in kidney disease:
- Having an enlarged prostate

What Happens If You Hold Your Pee All The Time
The connection between your brain and bladder can get mixed up. Initially your brain might get used to holding on to more and more urine but eventually your bladder might start misinterpreting normal sensations as strong urges and you might find yourself needing to rush to the bathroom more often and not be able to hold off. Sometimes, your bladder muscles can weaken and stop emptying all the urine in your bladder.
If you cannot squeeze your bladder, you might have to catheterize in order to empty it or you could begin to get bladder infections .

How many of you hate using public restrooms? Do you hold your urine because you despise having to get up in the middle of the night to urinate? When you get home, how often do you feel like your bladder is going to burst as you rush to the washroom? The number of times you need to urinate varies from person to person and is determined by how much you have consumed and how strong your bladder control is. While it is beneficial to be able to control your urge to urinate, it is also necessary to urinate when required. Here are some facts about the dangers of holding urine for an extended period of time.
Data Collection And Analysis
This was a cross sectional study conducted in eight ladies hostels of Pondicherry University during January 2019April 2019. Prior written informed consent of all the participants was obtained. The study was carried out on approval by Institutional Human ethics committee. The data was collected from the participants in form of self- reported responses to the questionnaires. Data were collected and analyzed using SPSS for Windows 24.0 . Data were presented as number and percent for categoric variables. The data with p value< 0.001 only was considered to be statistically significant. The p-value was calculated for statistical analysis of each parameter studied. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied.
Estimation of sample size: The minimum number of participants for the survey were calculated using the formula.
N=Desired sample size for the study. P=Prevalence of UTI symptoms among women from the region from previous study: 20.4% .
The estimated sample size was calculated to be 390. Thus a sample size of 410 women was taken to increase the representativeness of the sample, minimize sampling errors, increase generalizability of the result and cater for any drop out. It was possible for us to get the more than the desired sample size because of abundance of subjects who meet the desired criteria.

What To Do When It Hurts To Pee
Go to your primary care provider and get a urine culture done. Youll need to pee in a cup. A lab will then look for bacteria in your pee.
While you wait for the test results, drink lots of water to flush out your urinary system. Ask your provider about taking over-the-counter pain reliever AZO to help relieve your pain when you pee.
It takes about 2-3 days to get the urine culture results. If the results are positive and you have symptoms, you have an infection. Youll then need to take antibiotics for a few days, Beller says.
Can Dogs Go 8 Hours Without Peeing
When puppies are young, they have a bladder that can hold for an hour or two, but by the time they reach about eight months, this is not so. It is not safe to make your dog wait for this long. The longer you make them wait, the more likely your pet will get sick and require more frequent bathroom breaks. However, it is important to keep in mind that a healthy adult dog can go between eight and ten hours without needing to relieve itself.
Most dogs need to use the bathroom every two or three hours, and although they dont have a certain frequency, you should check them regularly if they havent peed in eight hours. Even so, it is not recommended that your dog wait for more than eight hours between visits to the bathroom. This can cause serious health problems in the long term, including urinary tract infections, urinary stones, and more.

Bothered By Uti Symptoms But No Bacterial Infection
Talk to your doctor about possible other causes for your symptoms. It could be related to your diet, stress, or other problems. Your doctor may check your urine for blood.
Definitely see a urologist if theres blood in your urine but no bacteria found in your pee test. Blood in the urine can be caused by:
There may be a delay in diagnosing bladder cancer in women when compared to men. Women often think blood in their urine is from a UTI because, as women, we’re more prone to them. Women also tend to be less alarmed by blood in the toilet than men and wait longer to tell their doctor, Beller says.
You Dont Say Can Your Bladder Burst From Holding It Too Long
Weve all held it before. Maybe you avoided the port-a-potty at an outdoor venue. Or you were making good time on a long car trip and didnt want to stop. Or perhaps you just didnt want to get out of bed when duty called during the night.
But does maintaining a long holding pattern like this cause any problems? Will your bladder literally burst if you wait too long?
The bladder is a mighty strong organ and is unlikely to rupture just because you denied it the opportunity to empty when its ready. Instead, its more likely youll become increasingly uncomfortable until you finally give up and urinate. While rare, the bladder might rupture under certain non-bathroom circumstances, such as
- major trauma for example, a pelvic fracture
- a surgical complication
- a bladder tumor that weakens a portion of the muscular bladder wall
- damage to the bladder from radiation.
Still, its probably not a good idea to frequently hold it. Doing so could cause bacteria to multiply, increasing your risk for urinary tract infections, especially if youve had prior episodes.
Over time, holding it could cause the bladder to stretch and make it difficult to contract and release urine. It also may increase the formation of kidney stones in people prone to having them.

Is It Bad For Dogs To Hold Their Pee
Your dog may be holding his urine for an excessively long amount of time. This can lead to bladder distention, urinary tract infections, and behavioral problems. Even though the length of time is short, you should not force your dog to hold his pee for too long. Holding urine for too long can also cause bladder stones and lead to incontinence. Your dog should be able to relieve itself three to five times per day, or at least once every eight hours.
The bladder is meant to stretch to a certain extent and the built-up pressure is supposed to push the pee out. A dog who holds his pee can cause a bladder to fill up like a balloon. The pressure in the bladder can cause your dog to pee before its bladder is full. If you notice your pet holding his pee for a long period of time, you should seek medical attention. If your pet is held by his bladder, you should immediately take it to a vet. Whether its an accident or a urinary tract infection, its important to get a professional opinion.
Things You Can Try Yourself

- give children liquid paracetamol follow the instructions on the bottle
- drink plenty of water
- avoid drinks that may irritate your bladder, like fruit juices, coffee and alcohol
Some people take cystitis sachets or cranberry drinks and products every day to prevent cystitis from happening, which might help. However, theres no evidence they help ease symptoms or treat cystitis if the infection has already started.

About Urinary Tract Infections In Children
Urinary tract infections in children are fairly common, but not usually serious. They can be effectively treated with antibiotics.
A UTI may be classed as either:
- an upper UTI if it’s a kidney infection or an infection of the ureters, the tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder
- a lower UTI if it’s a bladder infection or an infection of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body
How Is This Condition Diagnosed
If your child starts urinating frequently, see their pediatrician to rule out any other conditions that might be causing them to do so.
First, your childs doctor will do a full physical examination to make sure there arent any other symptoms of other conditions. Theyll ask you for a full history of your childs health leading up to the time when they started urinating frequently to see if any major changes indicate a possible health condition. Theyll also ask if your child recently started taking any new medications.
Your childs doctor will also check their body for signs that may suggest issues with the kidneys, genitals, or bowels, as these can all affect how often your child urinates.
They will also run tests to rule out any other conditions causing your child to urinate a lot. This includes:
Urinalysis. Your child will be asked to urinate into a cup or onto a dipstick. The urine may be sent to a lab for testing or checked in the doctors office. This test can make sure your child doesnt have diabetes, kidney conditions like nephrotic syndrome, or a bladder infection.
Blood tests. These are only occasionally necessary. Your childs doctor will use a small needle to take some of their blood and send it to a lab for testing. This test can also rule out diabetes, kidney, and bladder conditions.
