Clindamycin is a powerful antibiotic usually reserved for very serious bacterial infections of the lungs, skin, blood, female reproductive organs and other internal organs. It carries an FDA black-box warning to alert doctors and patients about possible adverse effects, including swelling of the face and tongue and serious skin reactions.
Clindamycin may be given to patients who cant take penicillin because theyve had an allergic reaction to it. This antibiotic wouldnt be a first choice for a urinary tract infection, but you dont say whether your wifes infection failed to respond to other treatment before the Clindamycin was prescribed. One reason that Clindamycin should be used with care is that it disrupts normal flora in the intestinal tract, sometimes causing a severe intestinal condition called pseudomembranous colitis. This can occur during treatment or up to two months later. The symptoms to watch out for are abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. If any occur during or following treatment, be sure to contact your physician immediately.

Theres no need to panic, but you and your healthcare provider will want to make sure the antibiotics actually worked against your UTI. Outpatient Versus Inpatient Uti Management
Patients who are well appearing, have stable vital signs, are able to maintain oral hydration and comply with oral therapy, and have no significant comorbid conditions can be treated as outpatients with adequate follow-up arranged in 48-72 hours.
If the patient appears toxic, has obstructive uropathy, has stones, is unable to tolerate fluids by mouth, has significant comorbid disease, or otherwise is unable to care for himself at home, inpatient admission is recommended. For example, consider admission for UTI for elderly patients and patients who have diabetes, who are immunocompromised, or who show signs of dehydration, hyperpyrexia, or rigors.
Initial inpatient treatment includes intravenous antimicrobial therapy with a third-generation cephalosporin, such as ceftriaxone a fluoroquinolone, such as ciprofloxacin or an aminoglycoside. Antipyretics, analgesics, and adequate IV fluids to restore appropriate circulatory volume and promote adequate urinary flow are also important.

How Do You Prevent A Bladder Infection
People who have recurrent bladder infections may be able to prevent them in some cases:
- Drink more fluids
- Urinate right after intercourse
- It is believed this will help flush out germs that can enter the bladder. There is no evidence this prevents bladder infections but it is not harmful.
Preventive antibiotics or antibiotics taken following intercourse, as recommended by your doctor
Cranberry juice, cranberry tablets, and a supplement called D-mannose have been promoted to help prevent frequent bladder infections but there are no studies that show these products are effective. However, use of these products probably is not harmful. Tell your doctor before taking any supplements.
How Is Clindamycin Given
Clindamycin is available in an oral liquid, tablets, and capsules. It may be given with or without food, but never give this medication as a dry pill. Give with a moist treat or small amount of liquid. If the pill becomes lodged in the throat or esophagus, it may cause ulcers.
Clindamycin has a very bitter taste, so you may need to disguise the medication in food in order for your pet to take it.
This medication will take effect quickly, in about 1 to 2 hours, but visible effects may take a few days to be recognized.
