When To Get Medical Advice

It’s a good idea to see your GP if you think you might have a UTI, particularly if:

  • you have symptoms of an upper UTI
  • the symptoms are severe or getting worse
  • the symptoms haven’t started to improve after a few days
  • you get UTIs frequently

Your GP can rule out other possible causes of your symptoms by testing a sample of your urine and can prescribe antibiotics if you do have an infection.

Antibiotics are usually recommended because untreated UTIs can potentially cause serious problems if they’re allowed to spread.

Signs And Symptoms Of Cystitis

Burning urination is never OK, advises Dr. Feuerstein. When you have a UTI and acidic urine passes through an inflamed urethra it can cause a burning sensation. However, burning urination doesnt always indicate a UTI. It could also be due to a sexually transmitted infection or another vaginal irritation, so have it checked out to fully determine the cause.

Treatments For Cystitis From A Gp

If you see a GP and they diagnose you with cystitis, you’ll usually be prescribed a course of antibiotics to treat the infection.

These should start to have an effect within a day or 2.

If you keep getting cystitis, a GP may give you an antibiotic prescription to take to a pharmacy whenever you develop symptoms, without needing to see a doctor first.

Your GP can also prescribe a low dose of antibiotics for you to take continuously over several months.

What Is A Bladder Infection

Cystitis is inflammation of the bladder. Most cystitis is from bacterial infections involving the bladder and less commonly may be due to other infectious diseases, including yeast infections, viral infections, or the result of other causes such as chemical irritants of the bladder, or for unknown reasons . Bladder infection is a type of urinary tract infection . Other forms of urinary tract infection include pyelonephritis , urethritis , and prostatitis . This review will specifically address infectious cystitis.

The urine in the bladder is normally free of bacteria . However, bacteria may be present in the bladder but not cause inflammation or symptoms of an infection.

  • This is asymptomatic bacteriuria, not cystitis.
  • Asymptomatic bacteriuria is bacteria in the urine that does not cause symptoms.
  • It is important to differentiate asymptomatic bacteriuria from cystitis, to prevent overuse of antibiotics.
  • Most people with asymptomatic bacteriuria do not require antibiotics.
  • In fact, the guidelines for the Infectious Disease Society of America recommend only treating asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant women or immediately before urologic procedures.

Chronic Fatigue: Tired Of Feeling Tired

Learn what may be causing your chronic fatigue … and 10 solutions.

Sure, we all know what it feels like to be tired. But chronic fatigue refers to a lingering tiredness that is constant and limiting.

According Harris H. McIlwain, MD, Tampa-based rheumatologist and author of The Fibromyalgia Handbook, patients who complain of fatigue feel tired even when they’ve had plenty of sleep and should feel rested.

While some patients admit to feeling sleepy, with fatigue there’s usually there’s a feeling of exhaustion without feeling drowsy says McIlwain, an adjunct professor at the University of South Florida. “Some patients with fatigue compare it to having the flu or to the feeling after working very long hours and missing a lot of sleep.”

These patients say they are fatigued on arising in the morning, fatigued after mild activity such as grocery shopping, too fatigued to function adequately at work or do household chores, and too fatigued to exercise or have sex, McIlwain says. “In most cases, there’s a reason for the fatigue, whether poor time management, too much caffeine, anemia, fibromyalgia, depression, or even undiagnosed heart disease.”

Before you blame your age or your “superwoman” lifestyle on your feelings of fatigue, learn what might be at the root of your unexplained tiredness and what some top experts recommend to resolve your chronic fatigue.

Theres Blood In Your Urine

Pink, red or cola-coloured urine can seem scary, but its usually not a sign of anything life-threatening. Its often present when you are suffering from a UTI, but there are other reasons it can happen, ranging from something as simple as having just eaten beets to kidney stones and certain cancers. Bottom line: It should be checked out.

Increased Frequency Of Urination

Urinary tract infection is one of the most common causes of frequent urination.

Frequent urination is defined as the need to urinate more than usual. This symptom is often confused with urinary urgency. It is an inconvenient symptom that can greatly disrupt daily life for a person with UTI.

The byproducts of the infection will create inflammation and irritation in the linings of the urethra and bladder. As a result, the irritation of the bladder wall creates the urge to empty the bladder frequently.

Furthermore, the bladder also often feels full. During each trip to the bathroom, the amount of urine is often less than the usual amount.

The bladder also sends confusing signals to the brain. The body would feel the need to pee even when the bladder might not be full.

Typically, the bladder can often hold as much as 600 ml of urine . The urge to urinate is usually felt when the bladder contains about 150 ml of urine .

Most people urinate between 4 to 8 times, depending on fluid intake, over a 24-hour period.

Burning Or Painful Urination

People with UTI often feel a burning sensation when they urinate. This symptom is one of the key signs that a person may have a urinary tract infection.

Burning urination or painful urination is medically known as dysuria. It can be caused by infectious and noninfectious conditions.

A urinary tract infection makes the lining of the bladder and urethra become red and irritated.

In addition to the burning sensation, there is also an itchy or stinging feeling as the urine comes out. The pain can be felt at the start of urination or after urination.

Pain is often felt in the urethra. These are the tubes that carry urine to the bladder. The pain can also extend to the area around the genitals.

Urinary Tract Infection In Infants

Infant boys and girls can suffer from UTIs, but they often experience symptoms different than those in older children and adults. Fever, irritability, poor feeding, and loose stools may occur in babies who have UTIs. Since these symptoms may occur with many other conditions, it can be difficult to diagnose UTIs in infants.

Is My Sinus Infection Making Me Tired

You feel worn-out, no matter how much sleep you get. Youre sluggish throughout the day. On top of that, every little thing seems to bug you. So whats going on? In some cases surprisingly it might be sinus infection fatigue.

Sinus infections, or sinusitis, have long been associated with chronic fatigue syndrome, a health condition in which no amount of sleep seems to keep you your normal, alert self.

Sometimes, the fatigue that comes with a sinus infection can be extreme, and other sinusitis symptoms can lead to trouble sleeping, making the situation worse.

If you know youre dealing with a sinus infection or if you just cant shake that tired feeling get the advice of a doctor. There are certain home remedies, medicines and surgical options that could offer help.

In the meantime, if youre trying to get some much-needed shuteye while dealing with a sinus infection, here are some tips.

  • Sleep on your back, propped up with a few pillows. Elevating your head and neck can help your sinuses drain easier.
  • Use a humidifier. Dry air can worsen sinusitis symptoms, so keep those moisture levels up.
  • Try herbal teas. Caffeine-free teas like chamomile, eucalyptus and lavender can soothe you and your sinuses. Plus, inhaling a bit of steam from your cup can help loosen your nasal passages.
  • Resist technology. It can be tempting to jump on your phone, tablet or laptop when your symptoms are preventing you from sleeping, but the light can disrupt your system and keep you up longer.

Surprising Reasons You’re Tired

Reason #1: An Undiagnosed Thyroid Problem

The source of your sleepiness could be a tiny organ near your throat that you may have never even thought about: your thyroid. According to recent estimates, 10 million Americansand as many as 10 percent of womenhave hypothyroidism, a condition that can lead to hair loss, weight gain and fatigue. “Fatigue arises from a lack of thyroid hormone in the body, resulting in a decline in overall metabolic rate,” says Pam Peeke, MD, author of Body for Life for Women. “Metabolism is like the body’s battery. If you lack the thyroid hormone, your battery is slowly drained, and lack of energy is one of the first symptoms noted.”

What to do? If you’re feeling fatigued, talk to your doctor about the possibility of a thyroid issue. “It is easily detected by a simple blood test that determines the level of thyroid hormone as well as its master hormone.” Treatment, usually daily replacement hormones, is inexpensive and noninvasive.

Reason #2: Undiagnosed Depression

The reason you’re feeling a lack of energy may have more to do with your mood than your body. Depression is the number-one risk factor for sleepiness and fatigue, says John Sharpe, MD, a Harvard psychiatrist and author of the new book The Emotional Calendar. And sometimes, he adds, this is how a depressive episode presentswith sudden drops in energy levels and an interest in sleeping more.

Reason #3: Undiagnosed Sleep Disorder

Reason #4: An Untreated Urinary Tract Infection

Causes Of Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary Tract Infection | How To Prevent UTI (2018)

Most urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria that live in the digestive system.

If these bacteria get into the urethra , they can cause infection. It’s thought the bacteria can spread from the skin around the anus to the urethra.

Women are more likely to develop a UTI than men. This is because a woman’s urethra is located closer to the anus than a man’s, which makes it easier for bacteria from the anus to reach the urethra.

How Do Health Care Professionals Diagnose A Bladder Infection

A urinalysis is the initial evaluation for a bladder infection. In most cases, health care professionals use a voided urine specimen, however, there is a risk of contamination by skin bacteria. A “clean-catch” voided urine specimen involves voiding and collecting a urine sample “mid-stream” as opposed to at the very start or end of voiding. A catheterized urine sample is more accurate but has the risk of introducing bacteria into the bladder and may be uncomfortable in children. In infants, medical professionals can perform a suprapubic aspiration.

The definitive test to determine if there is a bladder infection is the urine culture. The urine culture identifies the number and type of bacteria in the urine as well as determines the sensitivity of the bacteria to several different antibiotics. The usual cutoff for a urinary tract infection is the presence of greater than 100,000 bacteria, however, in the presence of symptoms, a positive leukocyte esterase or > 10 white blood cells on urinalysis, even fewer bacteria in the urine is supportive of a urinary tract infection.

Physicians sometimes recommend prophylactic antibiotics for individuals who develop frequent symptomatic UTIs. Similarly, women who develop UTIs related to sexual activity may take a single dose of antibiotic around the time of intercourse.

How To Treat Tiredness And Feeling Unwell

Because these are symptoms rather than ailments, treating fatigue requires some tests and determinations to diagnose the underlying cause, which can then be treated. While a patient can ward off some symptoms by taking supplements like a vitamin B complex to assist in boosting energy or vitamin C for increased immune system function, its necessary to treat the actually condition so that the symptoms dont recur.

If the problem is caused by a UTI, antibiotics will assist in clearing up the infection so that the body can recover and function normally. With other factors, there may be a difference solution. For example, medications are available to assist with sleep issues like insomnia. If a food intolerance or allergy is to blame, a dietary change may be required in order to relieve symptoms of fatigue. Thyroid disease can also be treated with medication.

Depression may require several steps to help reduce the effects of the mental condition. Medication may improve the chemical imbalance, and therapy can help improve the capability of a patient to understand and cope with depression.

11 Home Remedies For UTI

That weekend was supposed to be so fun. I always looked forward to hosting my grandchildren, who lived 45 miles away, overnight. But this time my extreme fatigue stole most of the energy and joy from our precious time together. The strange thing is, it wasnt the I probably did too much yesterday kind of fatigue. It was concerning, Mashunkashey said. That heavy blanket of fatigue covered me the rest of the week. All I wanted to do was lie down, and that just wasnt like me Im not a napping kind of person. She visited her doctor to ask about the exhaustion, but her doctor couldnt provide an answer.

This wasnt like other health issues Id had in the past, though. Years earlier I was prone to urinary tract infections. I once had six in the span of six months. I dreaded that unmistakable backache, the painful urination, and the urgency to pee, not to mention the doctors appointments and prescription co-pays for all those antibiotics. Thankfully, I seemed to have outgrown UTIs, but this new health complaint was such a mystery It worried me, Mashunkashey said.

You Have Nausea Or Vomiting

You can have nausea or vomiting from severe pain, says Dr. Feuerstein, although its not a common symptom of a UTI. It can be a sign you have an upper UTI thats moved up into your kidneys and should be checked out.

If you end up with a kidney infection youll have high back pain, too, explains Dr. Feuerstein. Its called the costovertebral angle, which is at the base of the ribs.

Are Home Remedies Effective For A Bladder Infection

People have used cranberry products to prevent bladder infections. Cranberries contain a substance that can prevent bacteria from sticking on the walls of the bladder. A Cochrane Database systematic review of cranberries for preventing UTIs in 2012 concluded that the evidence for cranberry products, particularly cranberry juice, over the long term is small and that cranberry juice could not be recommended at that time for the prevention of UTIs. Further studies need to evaluate other cranberry preparations.

Probiotics are preparations that contain live bacteria, for example, lactobacillus, that can prevent other bacteria from growing and moving up from the bladder to the kidney. The probiotic decreases the ability of the infecting bacteria from sticking to the bladder and growing and may also affect the ability of the individual’s own body to fight off bacteria. A Cochrane Database review in 2015 demonstrated no significant difference in the risks of recurrent UTIs for probiotics compared with placebo or antibiotic prophylaxis in either women or children, however, there were a limited number of good-quality studies.

Adhering to the prescribed antibiotic regimen and staying well hydrated are essential components of home remedies for bladder infection.
