Vaginal Itching Is A Very Personal But Highly Annoying Problem That Many Women Have
These same women may also have a bladder or urinary tract infection.
Bladder infections typically do not cause vaginal itching, says Michael Ingber, MD, board certified in urology, female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, and founder of The Center for Specialized Womens Health, division of Garden State Urology.
Dr. Ingber continues, Urinary tract infections occur when the bacteria in the vaginal region or perineum travel into the urinary tract through the urethra .
When there is overgrowth of this bacteria, this can become an infection.
Symptoms of a bladder infection are typically urinary symptoms such as urinary urgency, frequency, leakage or burning with urination.
What Causes Bleeding During A Uti
When you have a UTI, the bacteria infect the lining of your urinary tract. This leads to inflammation and irritation, causing red blood cells to leak into your urine.
If theres a tiny amount of blood in your urine, it wont be visible to the naked eye. This is called microscopic hematuria. A doctor will be able to see the blood when they look at your urine sample under a microscope.
But if theres enough blood to change the color of your urine, you have whats called gross hematuria. Your pee might look red, pink, or brown like cola.
If you menstruate, you might wonder if your bloody urine is caused by a UTI or menstruation.
Along with urinary bleeding, UTIs and periods share symptoms like:
- lower back pain
- abdominal or pelvis pain
- fatigue
To determine which one you have, consider your overall symptoms. Youre likely menstruating if you have:
- bloating or weight gain
- skin issues
- food cravings
These symptoms arent typically associated with UTIs. Plus, if you have your period, you wont see blood only when you pee. Youll also have red or darker clumps of blood continuously accumulating on your underwear with menstruation.

When Symptoms Become More Severe
If symptoms gradually worsen, this may be a sign of a kidney infection. Along with the traditional UTI symptoms of frequent and painful urination, these additional symptoms will occur.

- You will experience mild to severe pain on one of both sides of the lower back depending on where the infection has spread.

What Are The Symptoms Of Hematuria

In most cases, people with gross hematuria do not have other signs and symptoms. People with gross hematuria that includes blood clots in the urine may have bladder pain or pain in the back.
Inflammation In The Kidney
There are various conditions which can lead to inflammation in your kidneys. These can then result in blood in your urine, which is usually only found when a dipstick test of your urine is performed. This inflammation of the kidneys is called glomerulonephritis. Other symptoms such as tiredness and swelling around your eyes and legs can also sometimes occur.
The inflammation leads to glomerulonephritis which is usually due to a problem with your body’s immune system. This can sometimes be triggered by an infection. A urinary tract infection is a very common infection. It can occur anywhere in your urinary tract, which includes your kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most UTIs are caused by bacteria and affect the bladder and urethra.

A yeast infection can lead to minor bleeding, but it may not occur in everyone or every yeast infection a woman gets throughout her life. Typically, the bleeding is nothing to be worried about. It is caused by small cuts, tears, or sores in vaginal tissue that can occur because of the infection. Those most at risk of having bleeding during a yeast infection are those who have recurring yeast infections.
A yeast infection is a type of vaginitis, which refers to several disorders that cause vaginal inflammation. The inflammation can lead to pain, swelling, itching, and bleeding. Vaginitis is usually a result of a change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria, an infection, or reduced estrogen levels after menopause. There are seven common types of vaginitis, and yeast infection is one of them. Microscopic hematuria has no visible signs. Doctors will only know someone has it if a urine test finds it.

The usual cutoff for a urinary tract infection is the presence of greater than 100,000 bacteria, however, in the presence of symptoms, a positive leukocyte esterase or > 10 white blood cells on urinalysis, even fewer bacteria in the urine is supportive of a urinary tract infection.
Physicians sometimes recommend prophylactic antibiotics for individuals who develop frequent symptomatic UTIs. Similarly, women who develop UTIs related to sexual activity may take a single dose of antibiotic around the time of intercourse.

- Most people with asymptomatic bacteriuria do not require antibiotics.
