Essential Oils for Urinary Tract Infection

If you suffer from occasional UTIs like many women do, this post is a must-read!

Todays post addresses a health issue that are surprisingly common, especially among womenurinary tract infections . Around half of all women experience at least one UTI in their lifetime, and while men can get UTIs too, women get them up to 30 times more often than men.

UTIs occur when harmful bacteria gets into the urinary tract. And since womens urethras are both relatively short and located perilously close to sources of UTI-causing bacteria , theres really no mystery about why women get UTIs so much more often than men do.

But knowing how they happen doesnt make having a UTI suck any less! As someone who has dealt with recurring UTIs over the years, I can honestly say that there are few things in the world that make me feel more miserable than the burning sensation and I-have-to-pee-but-cant feeling that comes along with urinary tract infections.

Note: I am not a doctor, and this blog post should not be taken as medical advice. If you are experiencing intense pain, fever, nausea, or vomiting, seek medical attention right away, because untreated UTIs may worsen and spread to the kidneys and other parts of the body.

Fact Or Myth: Utis Can Be Treated With Essential Oils

Essential oils can be used to both support healing and make you feel better when you have a UTI. You dont want to use them in place of a drug, Chesla says. But essential oils are uniquely helpful because chemical constituents within the aromatic oils create physiological responses in the body, and because theres a direct connection with the sense of smell and the limbic system in the brain, where your emotions arise, she says.

Essential oils have not been scientifically studied for UTIs. However, some small studies have shown they can help battle other types of bacterial infections. For example, a review published in December 2019 in Complementary Therapies in Medicine on topical aromatherapy for the skin infection MRSA found significantly lower level of new MRSA emergence compared to routine care.

The Best Way To Use Oregano Oil To Treat Urinary Tract Infections

To use oregano oil for UTIs, you will have to take the oil internally and prepare a soothing cream and massage your lower stomach gently. For the lather, you can mix 2-3 drops of oregano with a tablespoon of a carrier oil and massage the lower abdomen 2-3 times a day.

To take oregano oil internally, you can add 2-3 drops of oregano oil in a glass of water and drink internally. You are not only limited to a glass of water but with any beverage of your choice. This is because oregano is also known for its strong taste. Using oregano directly for 14 days is the max you can go. If you are using the oil as an immune booster, you should take breaks and resume after like say 3 weeks to a month.

If that be the case, you can use oregano capsules for your convenience. You should use no more than 600mg a day. You can make your own oregano capsules by filling the mixture in empty gelatin capsules.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Urinary Tract Infection

UTIs are easily and commonly overlooked and mistaken for other conditions in adults. There can be absolutely no signs or symptoms of a UTI, or even just mild symptoms. The most common symptoms are:

  • Experiencing a burning sensation or pain when urinating
  • Having urine that smells strongly
  • Having urine that seems to look bright pink, red, or soda-colored- this is a sign of blood in the urine
  • Having urine that seems cloudy
  • Strong, persistent urges to urinate
  • Frequent urinations with small amounts of urine
  • Pain around the center of the pelvis and near the pubic bone.

While those are the more generalized symptoms, each type of UTI can have its own more-specific symptoms it just depends on which part of the urinary system is affected. Symptoms that are more specific for each area of the urinary tract include:

  • Bladder: painful/frequent urination, discomfort in the lower abdomen, pressure in the pelvis, and blood in the urine
  • Urethra: discharge and burning while urinating
  • Kidneys: nausea/vomiting, fever, shaking/chills, and upper back/side pain

Women seem to be more at risk for UTIs than men because the bacteria in female anatomy can spread easily. Women also have a shorter urethra than men, which means the bacteria have a shorter distance to travel to get to the bladder. Other factors that make women more at-risk for a UTI is sexual activity, using certain types of birth control , and experiencing hormonal/menopausal changes.

Essential Oils For Utis

Treatment for UTIs typically involves antibiotics prescribed by a doctor.

However, antibiotics can cause complications and side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and yeast infections.

For people who experience recurrent UTIs, it might be tempting to seek alternative treatments like essential oils, but it is important to do some research before using essential oils to help treat a UTI.

Essential oils may be a helpful method for healing and relieving UTI symptoms, but they should not be used in place of a drug. Essential oils have not been significantly studied for UTIs, however, some smaller studies have shown encouraging results.

For example, a 2020 study cited that cajeput, lemongrass, tea tree, and thyme exhibit antibacterial activities against a variety of pathogenic bacteria.

The following essential oils may help to fight bacteria that causes UTIs:

  • Cajeput oil: Known mainly for its antimicrobial and analgesic properties, cajeput is also thought to be anti-inflammatory.
  • Lemon or lemongrass oil: Research suggests lemongrass may have antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory attributes. Its also been found to possibly help kill off some harmful pathogens.
  • Tea tree oil: This oil has been shown to kill bacteria, likely thanks to a substance called terpinen-4-ol.

In order to avoid irritation, keep a few things in mind:

Lowering Stress Can Help With Utis

Stress plays a role in so many of our bodily conditions, so its not surprising it may be involved with recurrent UTIs. A review published in February 2017 in Current Opinion in Urology points to this potential link between emotional stress and bladder symptom.

Here, too, aromatherapy may help, because soothing scents can calm the stress response down, Clesla says. Good oils for de-stressing include lavender, sandalwood, and vetiver, alone or in combination.

Defend Essential Oil Blend

For Urinary Tract Infections

Defend is a blend of several essential oils with powerful antibacterial properties. The reason I wanted to mention it here at the top is because all five of the single essential oils that are considered beneficial for UTI treatment are actually ingredients in Defend.

Personally, that realization simplified things a lot! Instead of having to choose between five single oils, I can grab my trusty bottle of Defend and get the benefits of all five. 🙂

Drink Plenty Of Water

Fluids help flush harmful bacteria out of your system, so drinking water or fluids can go a long way in helping prevent an imminent UTI. Water dilutes the concentrated salts in urine as well, which can reduce discomfort when there is an infection by making urinating less painful.

Urine is produced by waste products from your body. When urine is dark, it may be more irritating and painful to pass when you have a bladder infection. When we drink water the urine becomes lighter in color and usually doesnt irritate as much, so drink enough fluid for your urine to become light yellow.

One study describes how chronic low fluid intake may be an important factor in the pathogenesis of UTIs. According to its analysis, the amount of water you should drink also depends on your body mass.

General recommendations have suggested that women get about 91 ounces of water daily and men get about 125 ounces each day, including water from food, as also noted in the previous report. Drinking water is very important because it can reduce the toxins in the body, so why dont you pick up that bottle of water and bring your body back to homeostasis?

Other Uti Treatment Options

Antibiotics are usually the first line treatment for UTIs. While the prescription takes time to set in, some complementary home remedies may help with UTI pain and discomfort. These include:

  • Drinking plenty of water. This will make you have to pee more, which can help flush the bacteria from your urinary tract.
  • Avoiding alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and anything with citrus juice. These can irritate the bladder, making you feel the need to urinate more often.
  • Applying a warm heating pad to your abdomen to ease bladder pressure and discomfort.

Avoid Coffee Alcohol Chocolate And Orange Juice

There are some kinds of foods that will worsen your symptoms. Try to reduce the amount of caffeine, alcohol, citrus, and chocolate that you are consuming. These foods stimulate the muscular walls of the bladder, increasing urinary urges and cause additional discomfort. Do not eat these foods when you are combating a UTI.

Strawberries, pineapple, orange juice and grape all have high acidity, which can increase the burning sensation during urination when you have a UTI. You can slowly reintroduce these foods into your diet after the pain and the urge for frequent urination has gone away.

Determination Of Minimal Inhibitory And Bactericidal Concentrations

Oils for a Healthy Bladder

MIC/MBC determinations were performed according to the CLSI- and EUCAST-Standards. Broth microdilution assay was used for determination of the MIC in artificial urine . Essential oils were first diluted in absolute ethanol and afterwards added to AU in the 96-well plate with a starting concentration of approximately 50 mg/mL . Afterwards, 2-fold serial dilutions in AU were performed. The MIC was defined as the lowest concentration inhibiting visible growth after incubation at 37 °C for 20 ± 2 h. For determination of MBCs, in a second step, 3 µL of each well of the cultured plate were transferred onto CAMHB agar supplemented with 5% blood using a one-time inoculator . The plates were incubated overnight at 37 °C. The number of colonies subsequently grown was used to determine the bactericidal endpoint. MBC was defined as a > 99.9% reduction of the initially inoculated colony counts. MIC/MBC determinations were performed thrice.
