Are Utis Dangerous To Health
Many UTIs clear up within a few days after being treated with antibiotics. But if a UTI is left untreated you risk running into more serious health complications. Complications include kidney infections and kidney damage, recurring urinary tract infections, and even sepsis.
UTIs are also more dangerous during pregnancy, when there is greater risk for a mother and baby. Its important to see or get in touch with your doctor right away If you have any symptoms of a UTI while pregnant.

Causes Of Urinary Tract Infections
UTIs are usually caused by bacteria from poo entering the urinary tract.
The bacteria enter through the tube that carries pee out of the body .
Women have a shorter urethra than men. This means bacteria are more likely to reach the bladder or kidneys and cause an infection.
Things that increase the risk of bacteria getting into the bladder include:

How Does A Woman Get A Urinary Tract Infection
It is important to drink sufficiently, so the bladder is flushed thoroughly. During urination the bladder should be emptied completely. It is a bad habit to sit on the toilet bent forward and reading while urinating. A trick is to place yourself backwards on the toilet, so you lean against the wall. This posture is more suitable in securing a complete emptying of the bladder than the usual sitting posture. Warm clothes on the lower part of the body will also help prevent cystitis.
As a prevention, it may be helpful to drink cranberry juice every day or take capsules. There is no doubt that this simple and natural treatment may help to reduce the frequency of recurrent infections. It is thought that the cranberry juice works by preventing common bacteria from sticking to the walls of the bladder and so preventing infection taking hold. Urination immediately after sexual intercourse will flush out most bacteria from the urethra. Try to urinate at least once every three hours. Women who avoid urination for long periods suffer from more infections of the urinary system.

Bacterial And Yeast Infections
Bacterial and yeast infections are among the most common and best-known problems capable of causing painful intercourse. These infections include bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis, and cervicitis, which is an infected and inflamed cervix. Of these, a yeast infection is most likely to cause painful sex.
As you can see, there are many possible reasons for painful intercourse before menopause. The good news is that we can help treat all of them: Call Fred A. Williams, MD, or book an appointment online.
Can You Have Sex With A Uti
Technically yes its unlikely to do any major damage but it might not feel very good.
If youre dealing with a burning sensation around your urethra, adding friction probably doesnt sound too appealing.
Plus, the last thing you need is to move more bacteria to the affected area and up the risk of further inflammation, which could mess with your treatment plan.

Incidence Of Urinary Tract Infection
Thirty of the 138 total UTI events were excluded from the analysis because there were no diary entries to determine sexual intercourse on or during the month preceding the corresponding UTI date. Thus, 108 symptomatic, culture-confirmed UTIs with 105 CFU/mL among 78 women were included in the final analysis. Sixty-five symptomatic UTIs were identified via dipslide, while 43 were detected through review of clinical records. All UTIs were followed up by interview to verify the presence of at least 2 symptoms. Of the 108 confirmed UTIs with at least 2 symptoms, 91 had an acute urinary symptom recorded in the diaries within 7 days of laboratory confirmation, while 17 had symptoms only noted upon personal interview. Of those who experienced a UTI, 59 women had one UTI, 12 women had 2, 3 women had 3, and 4 women had 4. E. coli was the predominant uropathogen, identified in 83 of the 108 infections, while the remaining UTIs were caused by Klebsiella species , Proteus species , Enterococcus , group B Streptococcus , Enterobacter species , Citrobacter freundii , and unspeciated gram-negative rods . E. coli continued to predominate when analyses were restricted to the first UTI and when UTI was defined as 104 CFU/mL.
What Is Bladder Infection
A bladder infection, also called cystitis, is caused by an abnormal growth of bacteria inside the bladder, the balloon-like organ that stores urine. Bladder infections are one of the most common bacterial infections to affect humans, with up to one-third of all females having at least one infection at some point in their lives.
Bladder infections are classified as either simple or complicated. Simple bladder infections affect only healthy women with normal urinary systems. Bladder infections are rare in men who are otherwise healthy, so men are included in the complicated category with members of both sexes who have abnormal urinary systems.

Diagnosis Of Childrens Symptoms Can Be Difficult
It may be difficult to diagnose a child with cystitis purely on the basis of the symptoms. A urine sample will usually be necessary, and in some cases blood samples.
The diagnosis and treatment will differ, depending on whether it is an upper or lower urinary tract infection. In cases of inflammation of the renal pelvis, an ultrasound scan or x-ray will be taken, or possibly an isotope examination, which is taken during urination.
This is to check whether the infection is due to congenital malformations which may make the child more prone to urinary tract infections.
Heavy Protein Loss Via Urine
When heavy protein loss takes place in the urine, patients deal with abnormal kidney functions. Heavy protein loss in human urine i.e. more than 0.3 grams in one day with its accompanying fluid retention implies nephritic syndrome. This syndrome leads to further reduction in the albumin concentration in the human blood. We know that albumin plays a prime role to maintain the level or volume of blood present in blood vessels. Hence, protein excretion causes reduction in the actual amount of fluid present in blood vessels. Kidneys then identify the depletion of exact volume of blood and hence, put efforts to retain the salt. Thus, fluid moves within the interstitial spaces and causes water retention. Protein loss in the urine takes place in specific kidney problems and thereby, leads to the edema development. In this situation, doctors go for biopsy of the patients kidneys to diagnose the type of kidney problem and thereby, give the right treatment.

What Can Cause A Bladder Infection
If youve ever had a urinary tract infection, then you know the excruciating pain it can cause. This pain can not only affect your physical health but your mental health as well. In fact, a 2017 review of studies found that people with urinary tract conditions experience higher levels of psychological stress, which can worsen symptoms.
Though mild bladder infections may go away on their own, most do not. Seek urgent medical care if symptoms persist for more than 24-48 hours.
A bladder infection is an infection in any part of the urinary system, the kidneys, bladder or urethra. While bladder infections are 14 times more frequent in women, men may also suffer from UTIs and symptoms like pelvic pain, an increased urge to urinate, burning pain with urination and blood in the urine.
While you may be familiar with the painful symptoms associated with these infections, you may not know whats causing them. If you understand common urinary infection causes, you will be in a better position to prevent them.

If You Have Sex With Uti:
If sex is in your mind, and your body cant resist, then there are few precautions you must consider.
a) Pee after and before sex:
Though it sounds less romantic and tedious, it is necessary to flush down all the bacteria as soon as the deed is done. Heading to the loo after and before sex is a great way to keep the bacteria away from entering the urethra.
b) Wash after sex:
c) Listen to your body:
While having sex, if you get the sudden urge to pee, then dont hold it. Take a break and rush to the loo the immediate hold to the pee may also enhance the possibility of acquiring an infection or allows the bacteria to travel closer to the vaginal opening.
d) Dont swap cranny:

Possible Preventive Strategies For Utis
While the research is still out on the preventative strategies below, prospects are promising.
- Probiotics The probiotic strain Lactobacillus, found in fermented milk products, has been shown to prevent urinary tract infections in laboratory testing. Theres also promising research that shows the strains L. rhamnosus gr-1 and L. fermentum rc-14 could prevent UTIs as well.
- Cranberry Juice Cranberries contain polyphenols called proanthocyanidins, which may help prevent E. coli from causing urinary tract infections in women, but data is conflicting about the effectiveness. While a meta-analysis published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine showed a decrease in UTI rates in those who consumed daily cranberry tablets, a subsequent review published in the Cochrane Database found insufficient evidence to recommend routine use of cranberry. The American Urological Association does recommend cranberry extract as a preventive measure for UTIs Ellura is a brand of cranberry extract capsules.
- Diet Adjustment Research has shown that urine with higher pH levels and higher levels of certain metabolites formed by gut microbes are better able to resist recurrent UTIs. Its thought that one can improve these levels through diet. For instance, calcium supplements raise urinary pH levels. In addition, consuming foods rich in antioxidants, like tea and colorful berries, may encourage growth of metabolites.
Ordinary Symptoms Of Cystitis:
- Fever and generally feeling unwell
- Blood in the urine
You may not necessarily have all the symptoms if you have cystitis. Some people experience all the symptoms, while others only find that it stings when they urinate.
The typical signs of cystitis are feeling that you need to urinate all the time, and that it stings and is painful when you do.

Some Myth Some Truth: Sexual Activity
Sexual intercourse indeed can be a strong trigger for a UTI, as can any activity that has the potential for putting infection-causing bacteria near the urethra.
Your partners anatomy can act as a ladder for infection of the urethra with bacteria that usually live in the bowel, said Dr. Dielubanza.
Use of spermicides with or without barrier contraceptives has been shown to increase the risk of urinary tract infections in sexually active women. Women may consider an alternative contraceptive regimen if they experience UTIs after intercourse.
Cystitis During Pregnancy Is Very Common
It is very common to develop cystitis or a urinary tract infection during pregnancy. For example, more pregnant women have urinary tract infections than women who are not pregnant.
For that reason, all pregnant women are checked for bacteria in their urine, even if they have no symptoms.
The symptoms and treatment of urinary tract infections in pregnant women are to a large extent the same as for non-pregnant women. If you are pregnant, you should be specially aware of fever or flank pain, which are symptoms of cystitis.
If you are pregnant and increasingly feel false labour contractions, it may be a sign that you have cystitis or inflammation of the renal pelvis, which also causes fever and flank pain.

What Can I Drink For Interstitial Cystitis
We all know that interstitial cystitis is a type of bacterial infection i.e. urinary tract infection. Hence, urologists and other doctors recommend you to stay hydrated yourself with the following types of fluids.
Consume Water In Enough Amounts As Possible: Drinking enough amount of water lets you diluting your urine and makes sure that urinate frequently. This helps in flushing out the harmful bacteria from the urinary tract before any infection starts.
Urologists have found a closed link between the hydration statuses of a person with his/her risk to suffer from urinary tract infection. The reason for this is that regular urination helps in flushing out the bacteria from the urinary tract and thereby, avoids infection. A research study conducted on patients using urinary catheters for a long time highlighted that low urine output was a prime risk factor related to UTI development.
Another study justified that low intake of fluids and infrequent urination was responsible to cause recurrent UTIs. Along with this, approximately 28 women self-monitored the hydration status with the help of a probe for measuring their urine concentration. These women found that an increase in hydration or water intake results in a significant decrease in the frequency of urinary tract infection. Hence, to keep yourself well hydrated and fulfill the fluid requirements, you should drink water during the whole day and always whenever you feel thirsty.
Tips To Reduce Cystitis After Sex
Before sex wash your genitals and hands well, maybe a warm bath with your partner will help. Some people believe that pubic hair is a haven for bacteria but if you do decide to exfoliate, be careful of ingrowing hairs which can cause problems in themselves.
Make sure you empty your bladder as soon as possible after sex as this will help flush out any bacteria that have entered.
Until it clears up, try to stick to a gentle missionary position and keep the length of time down!
Finally, if you have had repeated bacterial attacks a single dose of antibiotic taken within two hours of sex can also help.

When Should You Call Your Doctor
An immediate visit to a physician is warranted if you have a fever, flank pain, flu-like symptoms, or four-smelling vaginal discharge. These may be signs that your body may be fighting more than an uncomplicated UTI. Contrary to a common assumption among patients, the smell or appearance of urine by itself is not a reliable measure of infection, said Dr. Dielubanza.
Here she addresses some other common myths and truths about UTIs.
Can Sex Cause Uti
Yes, you can get UTI because of sex. Again, you don’t need to get a UTI every time you have sex. However, it doesn’t spread from person to person like sexually transmitted diseases.
As we said earlier, the bacteria get transferred from the urethra. This spreads while touching the genitalia while having sex, especially without cleaning the hands before that.
UTI during sex can also spread from sex toys if one doesn’t clean them regularly.
If you have a concern that can unprotected sex cause UTI, well, the answer is yes. Unprotected sex can be harmful. It can affect your body in multiple ways, be it STIs or UTIs. It is advisable to use protection so that there is no direct contact of genitalia with bacteria’s.

How To Prevent Utis When Youre Sexually Active
You don’t have to stop having sex to prevent UTIs. Here are some steps you can take to minimize bacteria buildup and reduce your risk of getting UTIs from sex.
- Urinate before sex and promptly after. This will flush your system and keep bacteria that has entered your urinary tract from gaining a foothold.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, then have an extra glass after intercourse. This will help rid your urinary tract of unwanted bacteria.
- Use a vaginal lubricant. Friction during sex can irritate the urethra.
- Consider a new form of birth control. If youre prone to UTIs, you may want to avoid using a diaphragm or spermicide as your form of pregnancy prevention. These can introduce bacteria into the area and can kill off healthy bacteria that keep the problem germs in check.
Can Antibiotics For Utis Interfere With Birth Control
Luckily, the antibiotics that healthcare providers often prescribe to treat a UTI will not interfere with your birth control, according to the CDC.
However, per the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, spermicide can make you susceptible to UTIs. Also, healthcare providers may not recommend the birth control gel Phexxi for people with a history of recurrent UTIs. If you frequently come down with UTIs, it might be a good idea to talk with your healthcare provider about whether switching birth control could help stop infections from developing.
