There are many different factors that your healthcare provider will consider when creating a treatment plan for your incontinence. The type of incontinence and the ways it affects your life are both big considerations. Your provider will also talk to you about the type of treatment you are most comfortable with. There are three main types of treatment you can explore for incontinence medications, lifestyle changes and surgery. Each option has pros and cons that your provider will discuss with you.
Medications to treat incontinence
There are quite a few medications that can reduce leakage. Some of these drugs stabilize the muscle contractions that cause problems with an overactive bladder. Other medications actually do the opposite thing relaxing muscles to allow your bladder to empty completely. Hormone replacement therapies can often involving replacing estrogen thats decreased during menopause may also help restore normal bladder function.
In many cases, medications can work very well to return normal function to the bladder. Your provider will carefully select a medication that matches your specific needs. Often, your provider will start you on a low dose of the medication and then increase it slowly. This is done to try and reduce your risks of side effects and to keep track of how well the medication is working to treat your incontinence.

Tips On Running With Urinary Incontinence
It has been shown that urinary incontinence often affects female athletes. A previous Health24 article reported that women who participate in high-impact sports are more prone to developing urinary incontinence than those who dont.
The activities in the study included ballet, volleyball and gymnastics. But many women also participate in long distance running. According to a previous study, your bladder health could be in jeopardy when you regularly partake in endurance events such as marathons.
“The added stress on the body that comes with running a marathon can cause urinary stress incontinence problems during the race or down the road,” said Dr Melinda Abernethy from the Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. “People who already suffer from incontinence also are at risk for bladder-control issues while running.”
But if you have a passion for running and you are experiencing urinary stress incontinence, there is no reason why you should give up something you love.

When you are running long distances, dehydration will certainly not help, as it can cause severe fatigue and irritate your bladder. While you will need to learn beforehand how much liquid your bladder can tolerate before you experience leaks, you dont want to avoid fluids altogether.
What If My Bladder Control Problems Are Not Just When Running
Pelvic floor dysfunction can cause other problems. Stress urinary incontinence refers to loss of control of urine with a cough, sneeze, laugh, or physical activity. Urgency refers to loss of urine with a strong urge to void. Overflow incontinence refers to leaking due to not emptying your bladder when it is full. Other urinary symptoms include increased frequency , night time voiding if you are under 65 , or a mix of any of these.

Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the muscles that support your bladder, uterus, and rectum become weak and allow these organs to fall. A normal pelvic function is about being strong and not tight as opposed to being weak and tight.
The goal with building strength and ensuring that we are not tight is to get our pelvic floor muscles to be working in conjunction with our deeper core, with a focus on our transverse abdominal muscle as well as our diaphragm.
The pelvic floor + diaphragm working together = Intraabdominal pressure
When we run, every step we take affects Intraabdominal pressure. If there is an imbalance or weakness or something not working in the way it should, it affects the pressure and hence leakage.

- citrus fruits or juices
Not everyone is sensitive to these things, but it is worth a trial of cutting them out before a run for a while to see if it makes a difference.

Why Cant I Hold My Pee When I Run
Most of the females we work with really struggle to grasp the concept that having a leaky bladder is NOT normal. It is dysfunction between your core and your pelvic floor.
Your pelvic floor is supposed to keep your urethra closed. The urethra is a tube that runs from your bladder to the outside and is only supposed to open once your brain tells it to. When the pelvic floor muscles become weak, or there is an imbalance/disconnect between deep core muscles and the pelvic floor, this is when urine will leak when you sneeze, jump or run.

Find The Right Balance Of Liquid Intake
Although it may be your instinct to start drinking less water when you have outlined a problem with stress incontinence, over-restriction can make it worse. Dehydration concentrates your urine, irritating the sensitive lining of your bladder.
Taking energy tablets and sugary sweets can also worsen dehydration, as your bladder feels a strong urge to purge this non-diluted waste product, causing mini-contractions to make you pee. Doctor Garges recommends dividing your body weight in half and adding 10 to 15 percent thats your baseline target of ounces per day. Take notes on how the amount and timing of your intake affect your mid-run leaks and stops and adjust from here.
It is also useful to adjust the times you normally drink water before your run, whilst also avoiding caffeinated and sugary drinks.

Leaking, or urinary incontinence, is a medical condition that refers to the involuntary loss of urine triggered by increased pressure or abrupt muscle contraction of the bladder.
In other words, its when youre unable to control your bladder.
Incontinence can be nothing but a minor nuisance to a complete loss of bladder control.
Surveys show that incontinence affects twice as many women as men.

Runners Incontinence: What To Do

If you repeat this exercise each time you run, you may find that youre able to progressively hold the urge for longer before needing to stop.

This might seem like common sense but paying attention to your bladder and stopping by the toilet just before you start your fitness routine can make a big difference in controlling leaks. To make sure youre getting as much urine out as you can, try double voiding: urinate until it feels like you are done, stand up, and sit down to urinate again.
