DIY- Natural way to improve women’s bladder problems

When youre in a rush, incomplete bladder emptying can cause issues far more problematic than taking the extra minute or so in the bathroom. Similar to urine-holding, incomplete bladder emptying allows a reservoir of urine to collect that can potentially cause urinary infections. It can also increase the odds of developing another painful problembladder stones, which are salt crystals that sometimes form when urinary concentration or stasis develops.

Incomplete emptying isnt something you are always aware you’re doing, but its a good idea to make an effort to ensure you are emptying your bladder, says Dr. Brito. He says this is a particular problem for older men with prostate issues. For them, incomplete bladder emptying can lead to a smaller functional bladder capacity and subsequent urinary frequency and urgency problems.

Often as men get older, they will not completely empty their bladder. The problem there is, if your bladder’s full and you empty it halfway and then drink fluids like you normally would, it fills up more quickly, says Dr. Brito.

Sometimes educating patients to take their time in the bathroom and ensure their bladder is as empty as possible can help, says Dr. Brito. Other times, patients may need medications or surgery to help the bladder empty better.

Natural Ways To Treat An Overactive Bladder

About a year ago, I began noticing I was getting up several times a night to pee. Once I thought about it, I realized I was peeing a lot during the day, too. The problem escalated and escalated until I was getting up three to five times a night, leading to severe sleep deprivation. Desperate for a solution, I got tested for interstitial cystitis, ovarian cysts, diabetes, kidney stones, you name it. But with all the results negative, I instead got the frustrating diagnosis of overactive bladder .

I describe an OAB diagnosis as frustrating because it doesnât have a simple cure. Your options are to go on medication, to see a physical therapist who can teach you helpful exercises or an osteopath who can manipulate your nerves, to try a more drastic treatment like Bladder Botox injections or electrical bladder stimulation, or to make a bunch of small changes to your lifestyle that can gradually alleviate the problem. âEven though treatment options exist, many patients opt for natural and homeopathic remedies, since no single treatment has been proven to be most effective,â Caleb Backe, Health and Wellness Expert for Maple Holistics, tells Bustle.

There are two main symptoms of OAB,Los Angeles-based urologist S. Adam Ramin, MD tells Bustle: urgency frequency and urgency incontinence . Some people with OAB only have the first symptom, while others have both.

Anticholinergic Drugs For Overactive Bowel

This particular class of medication is used to control the muscle spasms that lead to overactive bladder. Anticholinergic drugs focus on blocking the nerve signals that typically trigger inopportune bladder contractions, reduce the frequency, and the severity of your urge to urinate.

There are several anticholinergic drugs to choose from and they all require a doctors prescription. Most people have very favourable reactions to anticholinergics, though there are a few possible side effects which may include dry mouth, constipation, increased heartbeat and/or drowsiness.

Techniques For Complete Bladder Emptying

  • Timed voids. Urinate at least every three to four hours. Never hold the urine.
  • Double void. Before leaving the restroom, try to empty your bladder a second time. Focus on relaxing the muscles of the pelvic floor. You may try running your hands under warm water before your second void to trigger a relaxation response.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Fluids keep the urinary tract hydrated and clean.
  • Have a bowel movement every day. The rectum is just behind the bladder. If it is a full, it can prevent the bladder from functioning properly. Increase your fruit, fiber, water and walking until you have soft bowel movements and dont have to strain. You may add over the counter medications like Senna , Colace or Dulcolax .
  • Comfort and privacy are necessary to empty completely. Give yourself time to go.
  • Leaning forward may promote urination.
  • After you have finished passing urine, squeeze the pelvic floor to try to completely empty.
  • The sound of water can promote the bladder muscle to contract, but care should be taken not to promote bladder muscle instability with overuse of this technique.
  • Tapping over the bladder may assist in triggering a contraction in some people.
  • Stroking or tickling the lower back may stimulate urination and has been reported to be helpful in some patients.
  • Whistling provides a sustained outward breath with a gentle increase in pressure in the abdomen that may help with emptying your bladder.

4 tips for a healthier bladder when you’re paralyzed//heal your bladder, get less infections

If you dont mind visiting your doctor office frequently, posterior tibial nerve stimulation is a non-invasive OAB treatment option thats basically side-effect free. Its literally an acupuncture needle that we put on the side of the ankle and we connect it to a machine that sends a small electrical current to the tibial nerves, says Dr. Carmel. This nerve stimulation can calm bladder sensation and decrease urgency and frequency. The catch is, youll need to repeat the process once a week for 12 weeks, plus maintenance sessions every four to six weeks.

    Practice Healthy Urinary Habits

Avoid holding urine in your bladder for too long, as this can weaken your bladder muscles and make a bladder infection more likely. How often should you be urinating? Ideally, every three to four hours. Also, take your time when urinating. Rushing may not allow you to fully empty your bladder, which could also make a bladder infection more likely. Urinating in a calm manner will relax the muscles around your bladder, which makes it easier to empty it fully.

    Specific Antidepressants May Suppress Symptoms

Specific antidepressants such as Tofranil, Tyramine and Norfranil may help to suppress overactive bladder symptoms. Which one your doctor chooses to prescribe will depend on your particular symptoms.

For example, the SSRI class of antidepressants works better for stress incontinence than for urge incontinence, although its not clear how it helps. Alternatively, tricyclic antidepressants are known to have anticholinergic side effects, which relax the bladder muscle and cause the muscles of the bladder neck to contract.

    What Is Bladder Inflammation

Inflammation is a process where tissues become swollen, reddened, warm, and tender. It results from the activation of the immune system, usually against a microbe or another pathogen. In some cases, no infection is seen. Instead, the tissue becomes infected due to an auto-immune process.

Bladder inflammation features swelling of the bladder with the characteristics mentioned above. It is usually due to an infectious process called cystitis.

However, similar symptoms may show up if you have kidney disease, kidney stones, or bladder spasms. Bladder cancer also causes significant inflammation, and prostatitis may also affect the bladder and trigger similar symptoms.

Thus, urinary symptoms should be evaluated, and the source should be detected before treatment. Each disease is very different from the rest, even if they share similar features.

Mistake #: Not Drinking Enough Water

    BPH

Many urinary complaints are related to poor hydration. Generally speaking, if your urine is clear or very light, thatâs a sign you are drinking the right amount of water. If your urine is dark yellow or amber, thatâs usually a sign of dehydration.

Odor, an âoffâ color, and the sense of burning while voiding are other signs that might indicate you are not properly hydrated. Not drinking enough water can contribute to UTIs and kidney stones. Concentrated urine can irritate the lining of the bladder, making it more sensitive. It is also more likely to form kidney or bladder stones.

Many patients ask if drinking alternative fluids will suffice, but many beverages contain high sugar concentrations or caffeine, which can have other health effects, says Dr. Brito, noting these might make overactive bladder symptoms worse. Water is the safest option to maintain hydration and keep your kidneys and bladder healthy.

There are some conditions that can make your urine appear more concentrated even if you are well-hydrated, such as liver problems or hematuria. So, if you are drinking enough water but have dark-colored urine, odor, or burning, its worth a trip to a urologist, who can evaluate your symptoms more closely.

âThe ability to urinate freely and without difficulty is taken for granted by most people,â says Dr. Brito. So, next time you have to go, follow the above advice for better urinary health.

Medical Treatments For An Overactive Bladder

Depending on how successful they were and the strength of your condition, your doctor may recommend that you continue with the above treatments and return for another check-up after a specific period of time.

However, if they decide, usually in consultation with the patient, that medical treatment may be beneficial or necessary, they may choose to prescribe one or multiple medical treatments, some of which are detailed below.
