Although the mechanism behind skeletal muscle cramps is unclear, if a threshold for depolarization needs to be reached within motor neurons to initiate cramping, anything which conceivably reduces excitability might provide cramp prophylaxis. Hence, if magnesium supplementation were to truly suppress excitable tissue, it might also suppress muscle cramps. This would be consistent with the description of symptoms said to arise from severe magnesium deficiency, which include muscle cramping, though probably as a manifestation of tetany .
