This piece has been medically reviewed by Mica Phillips, Director of Aeroflow Urology.

Urinary incontinence is a fairly common condition, affecting over 13 million people and over half of all seniors in the U.S. For those on a limited income, it can be a struggle to purchase incontinence briefs, underpads, and other bladder control supplies for oneself or a loved one.

The good news is that most Medicaid plans cover the medical supplies needed to effectively manage incontinence symptoms for those with a related medical diagnosis. Aeroflow Urology will take care of filing all of the paperwork with your insurance provider and healthcare provider. To begin receiving free incontinence products through your insurance, all you have to do is fill out our quick and easy 2-step form. One of our Continence Care Specialists will reach out to you within 2 business days to verify your coverage options and provide guidance on which products will best fit your unique needs.

Whether you need bladder control pads, protective underwear, disposable briefs, or a mixture of different product types, Aeroflow Urology can help you with all of your continence care needs.

How To Do Kegel Exercises

To help reduce urine leakage, consider doing Kegel exercises by consciously squeezing the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles are the ones you would use to stop the flow of urine. Contract these muscles for 8 to 10 seconds and then slowly relax them. Work your way up to 8 to 12 repetitions, and do them 3 times per day.

Regularly performing Kegel exercises can strengthen the pelvic muscles that support the bladder. Some women find that it’s easier to perform these exercises with a Kegel exerciser. These devices are inserted into the vagina and then squeezed to keep them in place, working the pelvic floor muscles in the process. Know that Kegel exercises aren’t as helpful for certain types of incontinence, such as severe leakage with laughing, coughing, or sneezing and overflow incontinence. Ask your doctor if Kegel exercises can help you.

Tips For Living Well With Incontinence

Be prepared

Try thinking of practical solutions to problems that might arise while youre out. You could take some spare pads and pants with you. Scented bags for soiled pads or pants could be useful if youre worried about smell.

You may find a toilet card helpful. The Just Cant Wait card states clearly that you have a medical condition and that you need to use a toilet urgently. Showing this card can help you avoid the queue for a public toilet.

Take care of your skin

Washing regularly and drying carefully with a soft towel will help to keep your skin healthy. Change pads regularly, using a disposable wipe to remove any residue. If your skin becomes broken, speak with your doctor or a nurse immediately as it can lead to a skin infection.

Change pads frequently to avoid smell

Fresh urine should not smell offensive. If it does, there may be an infection. Good quality pads help to absorb some smell, but always change wet clothes as soon as possible.

Smell from bowel incontinence is more difficult to hide. Change soiled pads as soon as possible and put them in an airtight container or sealed bag.

Stay hydrated

Drink normally, unless your GP or nurse has told you otherwise. You should aim to drink 6-8 cups of liquid each day. Tea, coffee or other caffeinated drinks make your symptoms worse. Drinking too many fizzy drinks, alcoholic drinks, or drinks with artificial sweeteners in them can also irritate the bladder.

Prevent constipation

Dress for ease

    Disposable Pads And Pants

Bladder Control Pads vs Catheters (whats right for you?) ft. Tatiana Lee | #SpinaBifida

Disposable pads and pants are the most convenient, easy-to-use and more discreet type of incontinence pad, although not the most cost effective and environmentally-friendly. The pads come in different absorbances to contain from light to heavy leakage/soiling. Disposable pants have improved considerably in recent years and are designed to look like normal underwear but contain an absorbent pad in the crotch area.

For men they come in a variety of designs including

    • Disposable Liners these are better suited for those who have light to moderate bladder leakage. They can slip during strenuous activity so an alternative may be best considered during exercise
    • Disposable Leafs/Pouches are more discreet that liners and are designed specifically for men. These are more suitable for those with light bladder leakage
    • Disposable Pants are designed to look like everyday underwear but with an absorbent pad suitable for moderate to heavy bladder leakage
    • Disposable All-In-Ones these are a unisex product designed to contain heavy bladder leakage. They are also more suited to those who suffer from bladder and bowel incontinence
    • Disposable T-Shape Pads these are similar to all-in-ones and are used to contain moderate to heavy bladder and bowel leakage. They are supposed to be easier to put on standing up and use a belt attachment

    Using Tampons For Stress Incontinence

Placing a tampon in your vagina puts pressure on the neck of your bladder to stop leaks on exertion. However, do not regularly use super-size tampons to prevent sudden leaks if you have stress incontinence.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence does not recommend using tampons for the routine management of urinary incontinence in women.

However, tampons can be used occasionally, when necessary, to prevent leaks. For example, during exercise.

Which Additional Products Are Right For Caregiving

    Bed Protection

Accidents often happen at night and protective underwear isn’t always sufficient. Underpads help bedding stay dry and protect mattresses from damage.

    Cleansers & Creams

Cleansers can be used to remove impurities from the skin. Creams and lotions are designed for use after cleansing and contain ingredients that soothe, moisturize and protect the skin.

    Bedpans & Urinals

Bedpans and urinals are typically used by people with functional incontinence who are unable to get to the bathroom quickly. After use, a caregiver can empty into the toilet for quick cleanup.

    Cloths & Wipes

Cleansing after accidents is an important part of incontinence care, as urine can irritate skin. Wipes are thinner, similar to baby wipes, while cloths made from heavier fabric feel more like washcloths.

    Barrier Devices For Urinary Incontinence

Some devices control the flow of urine.

Women can choose devices that go inside the vagina, like tampons or vaginal sponges. They provide temporary control by putting pressure on the tissues of the bladder. This helps keep urine from escaping and is particularly good for stress incontinence, where exercise, laughing, and sneezing causes urine to leak.

For 24-hour protection, many women find a pessary helpful. This is a plastic device that’s inserted into the vagina. It comes in an array of sizes and shapes. It increases pressure on the urethra muscles and adds support to the pelvic region. These devices are fitted to your pelvis size, so youâll need to visit your doctor. You can remove them for cleaning. They should be replaced each year — and that means another trip to the doctor. Ask your doctor if a pessary is a good option for you. In some cases, they can make urinary incontinence worse.

A vaginal guard is another option. Theyâre disposable devices that come in three sizes. The guard is inserted into the vagina using an applicator. It prevents leaks by adding support to the pelvic structures and muscles.

For men, the primary device is a penile compression clamp. It squeezes the penis to keep the urethra closed for mild to moderate leaks. This can be used only for a certain amount of time.

    Washable Pads And Pants

    Capri Plus Bladder Control Pads, Regular, 5.5" x 10.5" , 28 ...

Although there is an initial out cost with washable incontinence products, they are more cost effective over time. Some people also prefer the absorbency of terry towels especially at night as it can contain quite a large volume. There is also less skin irritation involved. The downside is products designed for anything more than light leakage tend to be very bulky and not discreet.

    • Washable Liners these are less commonly used than disposable liners as they tend to not be as effective. They are better suited to those who have control but want the reassurance of a pad
    • Washable Leafs these work the same as a washable liner but are shaped to specifically fit the male shape
    • Washable Pants these look exactly like everyday underwear but have an absorbent pad in the crotch area. Some men wear these in conjunction with a disposable pad for extra protection
    • Washable All-In-Ones are usually made of terry towelling combine with a plastic pant to go over the top to avoid liquid seeping through. These are better for those with heavy bladder leakage. They are quite bulky though and folding and pinning the towelling into the correct shape can be quite fiddly

How Do I Choose The Right Incontinence Product

Is the product for bowel or bladder discharges?

As you now know, not all incontinence products are created equal. Certain products like incontinence pads and liners may not feature rear coverage unless specifically called out on the packaging. So, it is important to be sure the product you choose fits your needs. Adult diapers with tabs are ideal for bowel incontinence, but may be too of an extreme choice for those with minor urinary incontinence issues. If youre ever struggling to find the right choice, remember that you can call us at 855-1666 and well be happy to help.

Will it be used daytime or overnight?

Some people may need lighter protection during the day, and will opt for heavier protection at night. This is because theyll be changing their incontinence products more frequently while they are busy throughout their day, but would prefer to feel secure with a higher absorbency product at night that doesnt require as frequent changes. An overnight adult diaper can offer the peace of mind you need to sleep soundly and comfortably.

Do you or your loved one in need of incontinence products lead an active or more sedentary lifestyle?

Will the adult diaper need to suit the male or female anatomy?

Should you consider booster pads and accessories for added protection?
