Choose Foods That Reduce Constipation
Constipation can often put extra pressure on the bladder and therefore increase the urge to urinate . If it is incontinence you are experiencing, you can eat foods high in fiber such as whole wheat bread, vegetables and fruits. It can be helpful to incorporate these into your daily life to prevent constipation from occurring. Many people find a small glass of prune juice and a tablespoon of flaxoil. Remember however that eating too much fiber without any water can sometimes worsen constipation. Ensure you drink a lot of water if you are also increasing fiber intake.

The painful symptoms of a UTI are not only annoying, but they can also be dangerousleading to serious consequences if the infection reaches the kidneys. The first step to feeling better is contacting a doctor, but there are some ways you may be able to relieve UTI symptoms in addition to following a professional care plan. Check If It’s Cystitis
- pain, burning or stinging when you pee
- needing to pee more often and urgently than usual
- pee that’s dark, cloudy or strong smelling

Symptoms in young children may also include:

- wetting themselves

Caffeine And Bladder Problems: Advice
The new study findings lend weight to advice many doctors already give, Arya says.
”For the woman with problems, it should ideally be zero caffeine,” she says. But she’s realistic, knowing ”you have to be able to get through the day.” So she tells these women, “Have a cup, one small cup, but make it as small as you can, definitely less than 8 ounces.”
For women without bladder problems? “Up to two cups a day is generally fine. No bigger than 12 ounces, and the second cup should preferably be decaf.”
“If you review all the caffeine literature, it seems like, in the U.S., up to two cups of coffee a day is considered moderate.” Whatâs more difficult, she says, is defining a cup.
Years ago, she tells WebMD, researchers considered 5 ounces to be a ”standard” cup. “That’s your grandma’s china cup,” she says.
These days, many researchers view an 8-ounce cup standard, she says. But coffee sold at outlets is often served in a much bigger cup.
At Starbucks, for instance, a short is 8 ounces but a tall is 12, a grande is 16, and a venti, 20 ounces.

How Does Decaf Coffee Differ And How Does It Affect The Body
Contrary to popular belief, decaf coffee is not 100% caffeine free. The decaffeination process removes around 97% of the caffeine in the coffee, leaving about 7mg in a cup of decaf coffee, compared to 70-140mg in a cup of regular coffee.9 For comparison, a cup of black tea contains, on average, 47mg of caffeine.10

Myth: Baths Are The Only Factor That Increases The Risk Of Getting A Uti
MYTH! There are several factors that increase the risk for a urinary tract infection. For women, the short length of the urethra, the tube that brings urine from the bladder to the outside world, makes it easier for bacteria to climb up and get into the bladder.
Frequent intercourse is also associated with an increased chance of a UTI because the act of intercourse can push bacteria into that urethra. Therefore, its a good recommendation to empty your bladder after intercourse to rinse bacteria out of the urethra before it has a chance to go up into the bladder.
Additionally, it is important that women properly wipe from the front to the back to ensure that no bacteria are able to enter the bladder.

Does Caffeine Impact The Bladder
In addition to the above, caffeine can also impact the bladder. Coffee consumption can increase the frequency or urgency of urination because it relaxes your pelvic and urethral muscles.5 It can also irritate your bladder due to its acidity.6 Read more here about why acidity is bad for your bladder and what other dietary changes you can make to improve your bladder health.
Because of all these health impacts, its recommended that you drink a maximum of four to five cups of coffee a day or a maximum of 400mg of caffeine7. However, if you have an overactive bladder or other bladder problems, then it is recommended that you reduce or completely avoid caffeine8.
Things To Avoid: Sugar & Utis
Adjusting your diet for a UTI involves more than introducing certain foods and drinks it also means abstaining from things. Not sure where to start? Heres a simple rule of thumb to follow: Avoid sugar for a UTI. Sugar is laced in an overwhelming amount of commercial foods and drinks these days. Unfortunately, it can also aggravate an infection. To cut back on these sugary delights and boost your care plan for a UTI, avoid:
- Artificial sweeteners
Although theres no evidence that artificial sweeteners can worsen a UTI, they have been shown to exacerbate bladder symptoms for individuals with chronic interstitial cystitis, so you may want to avoid them. Other foods and beverages to avoid with a UTI include:
- Spicy foods. Certain spicy foods can irritate the bladder. Instead, try sticking to a bland dietlike the BRAT dietwhen you have a UTI.
- Citrus. Although theyre high in immunity-boosting vitamin C, highly acidic fruits like oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits can irritate your bladder and aggravate UTI symptoms.
- Caffeinated drinks. Its important to stay hydrated when you have a UTI, but stay away from coffee and other caffeinated beverages. When in doubt, choose water!

What Not To Do If You Have A Uti
DO NOT have sexual intercourse. You dont want to have sex after your UTI for at least two weeks until your symptoms have cleared up. Intercourse can worsen your symptoms and possibly make your infection worse. Sex during a UTI could also be uncomfortable or painful.
DO NOT drink alcohol. While you should get plenty of fluids, you need to stay away from alcohol. Alcoholic drinks can irritate the bladder and worsen the infection.
DO NOT eat artificial sweetener. Even when you dont have a UTI, you should avoid artificial sweeteners. They can intensify your bladder symptoms.
DO NOT drink caffeine. You may think that you cant get by without your cup of coffee in the morning. However, it may be beneficial to skip it while youre suffering from a UTI. Those who regularly drink caffeine have more severe UTI symptoms. This is because caffeine has been shown to irritate the bladder.

Foods For Urinary Tract Infection
Most females experience a urinary tract infection, or UTI at least once in their life at some point. While men can also get UTIs, they are more common in females. Because of a shorter urethra, females are at a higher risk of getting a UTI.
Common symptoms of UTI are-

- Frequent urination
- Urinating small amounts even after going to the washroom repeatedly.

Fact Or Myth: Utis Can Be Treated With Essential Oils

How Are Urinary Tract Infections Diagnosed
Your doctor will review your medical history and do a physical exam. Other tests may include:

If UTIs become a repeated problem, other tests may be used to see if the urinary tract is normal. These tests may include:
- Intravenous pyelogram . This is a series of X-rays of the kidney, ureters , and bladder. It uses a contrast dye injected into a vein. This can be used to find tumors, structural abnormalities, kidney stones, or blockages. It also checks blood flow in the kidneys.
- Cystoscopy. In this test, a thin, flexible tube and viewing device is put in through the urethra to examine the bladder and other parts of the urinary tract. Structural changes or blockages, such as tumors or stones can be found.
- Kidney and bladder ultrasound. This imaging test uses high-frequency sound waves to make images of the bladder and the kidneys on a computer screen. The test is used to determine the size and shape of the bladder and the kidneys, and check for a mass, kidney stone, cysts, or other blockages or abnormalities.
If You Suffer From A Uti Should You Avoid Using A Hot Tub
As hot tubs are high-risk factors for catching a UTI, one should definitely avoid using a spa, whirlpool or hot tub if they already have an existing UTI. This may cause your already existing infection to aggravate and cause more serious issues. You could also risk infecting others by spreading your bacteria into the hot tub as well.
Even if you dont have a UTI you should be very careful and be sure to only use hot tubs that are properly decontaminated and checked regularly.
