Here are some circumstances under which your pug may pee in the house and why:

For puppies, this may happen when theyre not well potty-trained.
And for adult potty-trained pugs, it may be the inability to hold up to their pee before they get to their peeing spot.

An Underlying Medical Problem

Female dogs spayed before three months of age have been found to be more prone to incontinence . They usually show signs 2 to 3 years after being spayed though, although the first signs may even show weeks following the surgery.
There is therefore general agreement that the risk of urinary incontinence increases in these dogs, especially the larger-sized ones, explains board-certified veterinarian Dr. Julie K. Byron. Although occasionally urethral sphincter incontinent occurs in male dogs, it has not been definitively associated with neutering.
Puppy Potty Training Steps
Step One: Take your puppy on a leash to their potty spot. Stand quietly and let your puppy sniff in that area.
Step Two: Praise and reward them if they go potty! Make sure to wait until they’ve finished their business before giving excited praise or offering a treat you don’t want to distract them before they’re fully done.
Step Three: If they don’t go potty after one to two minutes of being in their spot, return inside. Don’t let them play outside or do anything else other than their potty business. Play and rewards only come after they’re done, not before.
You’ll want to try again after waiting a short time. Don’t allow them the freedom to roam during this period. Instead, keep them tethered to you so you can watch for indications they need to go potty . If you’re unable to keep a close eye on them, place them in their crate or puppy pen. Wait just five to ten minutes before taking them outside again for another chance to go potty.
If they DO have a successful potty break, you can allow them some supervised freedom inside your home. Don’t let them wander around for too long. Refer to the puppy house training flow chart further below to determine when their next potty break should be.

Choosing To Allow Your Dog To Toilet Outside Insideor Both
There are a few different methods of house training, but essentially they all come down to two different types and one important decision: Do you want your dog to toilet inside, outside or both?
You should make this decision long before you get your puppy home, prepare correctly and then dedicate yourself to see the training through until its totally ingrained and proven.
So how do you decide which way is best?
It depends on your living situation and your personal preferences. There is no right or wrong.
What To Do If Your Puppy Has An Accident Inside
Accidents happen. Please do not punish your puppy for having an accident inside the house. Dog trainers will tell you that part of having a puppy is that you have to watch them all the time. Then, youâll learn to appreciate the subtle signs the puppy gives when they need to go potty. For example, circling and sniffing the ground are classic signs.
Youâll be able to escort them outside before they pee inside. If youâre not quick enough, then try to make a loud noise and distract the puppy. This can cause a muscle contraction and you can get the puppy outside and to the right place.
Then praise the puppy when they finish in the right spot. You can use an odor neutralizer to clean the area inside, which will help with the smell.
Then, note the time and make sure to get back on schedule.

To Potty Train Your Puppy Establish A Routine
Puppies do best on a regular schedule. The schedule teaches them that there are times to eat, times to play and times to do their business. Typically, a puppy can control their bladder one hour for every month of age. So if your puppy is 2 months old, they can hold it for about two hours. Don’t go longer than this between bathroom breaks or theyre likely to have an accident.
Take your puppy outside frequentlyat least every two hoursand immediately after they wake up, during and after playing, and after eating or drinking.
Pick a bathroom spot outside, and always take your puppy to that spot. While your puppy is relieving themselves, use a specific word or phrase that you can eventually use before they go to remind them what to do. Take them out for a longer walk or some playtime only after they have eliminated.
Reward your puppy every time they eliminate outdoors. Praise or give treatsbut remember to do so immediately after theyve finished, not after they come back inside. This step is vital, because rewarding your dog for going outdoors is the only way to teach what’s expected of them. Before rewarding, be sure theyre finished. Puppies are easily distracted and if you praise too soon, they may forget to finish until theyre back in the house.

How Often Do Dogs Pee
When you get your first puppy, there are so many questions, like how often do they pee? Tiny puppies, like other baby mammals, have no idea how to hold it. As frustrating as those little puddles can be, they are normal. As your dog grows, theyll learn just like you did. Luckily, they grow fast.
A one-month-old pup can typically retain urine for about an hour before they have to go. As puppies grow up, their bladder expands, and the need gets less. Every month or so, your new puppy should add an hour to their waiting time.
Once theyve reached eight or nine months old, youll have an idea of how long they can wait to go. While some variation is normal, eight hours is the max for most breeds and individual dogs. However, if your pooch is a teacup breed, their diminutive size comes with an itty bitty bladder. Theyll have to go out more often.
The largest dogs, especially those who work, like herding dogs, police K9s, and rescue working Rovers, can sometimes hold it quite a bit longer. Having a bigger dog means a sizeable bladder. Likewise, it also means drinking more water. As a result, many large dogs still max out around eight hours.

Take Your Puppy To The Same Distraction
So you and your puppy made it outside without any accidents. Now what? Your puppy may not quite understand why youve rushed them out the door. To help your puppy understand it isnt playtime, youll need to keep a few things in mind:
- Always take your pup to a secluded area
- Try to stick to the same spot every time you take them out
- Be boringdont play with your puppy or pay attention to them to limit distractions
- Dont get frustrated or yell at them in an effort to get them to do what you want
Remember, your puppy may not go every time you take them outside. This isnt the end of the world. If theres no success then go back inside and try again later. Eventually, your pup will figure out what the desired routine is.
But, if your puppy does go while youre outside you want to reward them for their good behavior. This is an even stronger reward with the juxtaposition to your previous, boring pre-potty self.
