How Do I Replace A Bladder In A Bdt Series Bladder Tank

1. Isolate multi-purpose bladder type expansion tank from the system. Shut off automatic fill, valve, and drain boiler to release all system pressure.

2. Bleed system air charge through air charging valve. Remove air valve core at top of the tank and discharge remaining air.

3. Disconnect tank from the system.

4. Remove the bolted bottom flange. Prior to removal, mark mating flanges in order to match up properly when reassembling.

5. Loosen and remove the retaining nut on top of the tank. For tanks 26 gallons and smaller, proceed to step 6.

6. Using the chain block and a slight twisting motion, slide the bladder out of the tank. Remove the bladder retaining bolt from the inside of the bladder.

7. Clean up any remaining water, dry out the inside of the tank and clean out any remaining dirt or foreign particles. Check the inside of the tank for any sharp edges that may cut the bladder.

8. Place bladder bot inside new bladder secured with 1/4″ All Thread Rod threaded into the top of bladder bolt. Roll up the bladder as necessary and pull through the tank with a threaded rod.

9. Secure bladder bolt to the top of the tank with retaining nut. Hand tightens at this point. For tanks 26 gallons and smaller, proceed to step 10.

10. Position the bottom neck of the bladder in the bottom of the tank opening to act as gasket sealing surface for system connection.

11. Replace the bottom flange, align the marks and tighten the bolts evenly, using a star pattern.

    What Is The Life Expectancy Of Expansion Tanks

    The life expectancy of expansion tanks is very unpredictable.

    There are several variables that affect the duration of the tank, such as the quality of the tank, the quality of the water and the proper inflation of the tank, etc. We saw several tanks that failed in just two years and eight months, causing serious damage to the water, and some for eight years. As a precaution, we recommend replacing them within a year after the expiration of the manufacturers warranty.

    Tanks installed in this area usually have a warranty of one or five years, so the replacement should be every two to six years.

    Water Tank Not Properly Located Can Also Cause Improper Pressure Switch Operation

    Iif you place the water pressure tank too far from the pump pressure switch, or at a different elevation from the pressure switch, the pressure switch control may not operate properly. Here is what Amtrol says about tank location:

    How The Water Bladder Tank Works

    Water leaves the water bladder tank each time that the water is used in your home or yard. As the water leaves the tank, the bladder gets smaller and the water pressure drops within the tank. Water bladder tanks also contain air within the water tank. When the water leaves the tank, the air pressure inside the water bladder tank also drops. A pressure control switch, which is usually located near the water tank, senses the drop in pressure within the tank and, after the pressure lowers to a certain level, the contacts within the pressure switch are pushed together, which turns on the water pump. The activated water pump draws water from the well which refills the tank and restores the water and air pressure within the tank.

    If you need to tune your bladder-type water tank to work exactly properly with your pump pressure control switch, or if you know that someone has already modified the pressure in your water tank and you want to restore it to factory specifications, a reasonable procedure is the following recommended by the manufacturer:

    • Remove all water from the water tank.     Factory Warnings About Changing The Bladder Tank Pressure Setting

    When the Well-X-Trol has been in service and a change to a higher pre-charge pressure is necessary due to a required change in the pressure switch setting, failure to follow instructions below can cause a rupture or explosion, possibly causing serious or fatal personal injury, and/or property damage.

    • Do not adjust or add pressure if there has been a loss of air.
    • Do not adjust the pre-charge pressure if there is visible exterior corrosion.
    • Do not adjust the pre-charge pressure if there has been a reduction of the pump cycle time or the pre-charge pressure compared to its initial setting. This is because reduction in pump cycle time can result from loss of tank air pressure which in turn can mean there may be internal corrosion and any repressurization or additional pressure could result in rupture or explosion.

    Sometimes you may come across your delivery pump with bladder tank short cycling. What does this mean? Short cycling is when your pump is coming on and off in very short intervals rather than a normal cycle . A bladder tank will help reduce the on/off cycling of the pump.

    Bladder Tank

    Inside the tank is a rubber bladder mostly shaped like the metal tank itself. This bladder is charged or filled with ambient air, much like a bicycle tube, and is set at a pressure according to the tank size and specs. As the delivery pump runs, water is pushed through the plumbing and delivered to the applications, and at the same time, fills water into the tank. Once the applications close, the pump still pushes water into the bladder tank and does so until the desired pressure is achieved. This pressure is determined by the pressure switch, located on the side of the bladder tank. Once an application opens down the line, the water from the bladder tank is pushed out via the bladder that is charged with air, until the pressure switch activates to run the pump. We also have on and off delays built into our system to minimize short cycling even further.
