What Is An Overactive Bladder Symptoms To Look For

Overactive bladder is a syndrome, or a set of symptoms, that is believed to be due to sudden contractions of the muscles in the wall of the bladder. When you have overactive bladder syndrome, the muscles controlling bladder function start acting involuntarily. This often leads to urinary incontinence or loss of bladder control. The urine leakage experienced by someone with OAB can be as little as several drops to up to several ounces. Sometimes, incontinence can be a sign of something simple like drinking way too many caffeinated beverages on a daily basis. Other times the underlying cause can be something more serious.

An overactive bladder is said to account for 40 to 70 percent of incontinence. What is incontinence? Incontinence is a lack of voluntary control over urination or defecation. When you have overactive bladder, you can experience urinary incontinence or loss of control over urination.

There are actually two different types of overactive bladder. Dry is when you have a sudden, urgent need to urinate many times during the day. Wet means you have the sudden, urgent need to urinate and you experience bladder leakage, which is also referred to as urge incontinence. Both dry and wet can occur without any underlying health condition. An estimated 60 percent of OAB patients have dry OAB while 40 percent have wet OAB .

OAB symptoms can differ on an individual case basis. Common symptoms of an overactive bladder include:

Causes And Risk Factors

Aging

OAB occurs in both men and women. Its possible to have overactive bladder at any point in your life. But, its especially common in older adults. The prevalence of OAB in people younger than 50 years of age is less than 10 percent. After the age of 60, the prevalence increases to 20 to 30 percent.

The following are some of the other most common underlying causes and risk factors associated with OAB symptoms:

Nerve Damage

A healthy, normal functioning bladder holds urine until it gets full and is prompted to empty by nerve signals. However, when nerve damage occurs in the body, the muscles surrounding the urethra can be too loose. This undesirable looseness can cause someone to become incontinent. What can cause nerve damage that can then lead to bladder leakage? Some possibilities include:

  • Back or pelvis surgery

Weak pelvic muscles

When a man or womans pelvic floor muscles are weak, bladder control issues can happen. The pelvic floor muscles are like a sling that holds up the uterus and bladder. For women, a pregnancy and childbirth can often lead to a stretching and weakening of the vital pelvic floor muscles. When pelvic floor muscles are compromised for this reason or another, the bladder can then sag out of place. The opening of the urethra also stretches and urine easily leaks out.

Menopause

Extra weight or obesity

Diuretic medications

The Relationship Between Your Diet And Overactive Bladder

Essential Oil for Urinary Incontinence

Living with an overactive bladder means that you need to consider making some diet changes seriously. Over the years, doctors have concluded that there is a variety of foods and drinks that worsen OAB symptoms.

Some of them, such as alcohol, overstimulate the already sensitive bladder, thus making your bathroom visits more frequent. Others, such as spicy food, make the symptoms harder to control.

It is no surprise knowing how big of an effect diet has on our overall health, both physical and mental health. However, figuring out what exactly worsens your symptoms can take some time. This is, after all, a lengthy process that is unique for everyone. What may work for you does not necessarily mean that it will work for the next patient.

Knowing that you would need to experiment quite a lot when it comes to your diet. And this rule is not limited to food only. Instead, it also refers to drinks, including some of the most popular drinks such as coffee, alcohol, and even energy drinks.

One drink that many patients have divided feelings about is water. There is no doubt that water is the best drink for ultimate health. However, OAB patients still need to keep an eye on their water intake as well.

No matter how healthy it is, every drink can potentially worsen your symptoms. With the excessive amount of water, expect more frequent trips to the bathroom. And if you are drinking carbonated water, the symptoms are even worse.

Urinary Incontinence The Mad Dash To The Bathroom

Well, the indignities of aging keep piling up, yet I continue to look to herbs for assistance with any new “senior” developments.

Women often ask what to do about urinary incontinence. Rather than an embarrassment, and not necessarily indicative of anything seriously wrong, let’s consider how we got to the moment in our lives where a loud laugh, a sneeze, or a cough suddenly causes a urinary leak .

Have we been standing on this planet for a few decades? Gravity exerts a powerful pull on us, easily evidenced by the condition of our skin as time passes, but noticeable also through changes to the muscles of our pelvic floor and the organs it supports.

High-impact exercise, heavy lifting, chronic constipation, excessive coughing, pregnancy and childbirth, surgery, menopause, aging, and heredity are examples of contributors to the breakdown of competency of the pelvic floor and organs. Thus, our lifestyle choices, medical conditions that arise, the act of growing old, and our genetic background can circumscribe their health.

We can begin our effort to resolve incontinence by paying attention to our bladder signals and not postponing going to the bathroom. Consider also re-training and strengthening your bladder by scheduling regular trips to the bathroom, remaining as consistent as possible with your timing. Gradually stretch the length of time between visits, and one day you may find your bladder better capable of holding more urine and voiding less.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Urinary Tract Infection

Essential Oil Tips for Bladder Support, Leakage, Medical Procedures, & More!

UTIs are easily and commonly overlooked and mistaken for other conditions in adults. There can be absolutely no signs or symptoms of a UTI, or even just mild symptoms. The most common symptoms are:

  • Experiencing a burning sensation or pain when urinating
  • Having urine that smells strongly
  • Having urine that seems to look bright pink, red, or soda-colored- this is a sign of blood in the urine
  • Having urine that seems cloudy
  • Strong, persistent urges to urinate
  • Frequent urinations with small amounts of urine
  • Pain around the center of the pelvis and near the pubic bone.

While those are the more generalized symptoms, each type of UTI can have its own more-specific symptoms it just depends on which part of the urinary system is affected. Symptoms that are more specific for each area of the urinary tract include:

  • Bladder: painful/frequent urination, discomfort in the lower abdomen, pressure in the pelvis, and blood in the urine
  • Urethra: discharge and burning while urinating
  • Kidneys: nausea/vomiting, fever, shaking/chills, and upper back/side pain

Women seem to be more at risk for UTIs than men because the bacteria in female anatomy can spread easily. Women also have a shorter urethra than men, which means the bacteria have a shorter distance to travel to get to the bladder. Other factors that make women more at-risk for a UTI is sexual activity, using certain types of birth control , and experiencing hormonal/menopausal changes.

What Can Cause An Overactive Bladder

The term overactive bladder refers to the sudden urge to urinate. This condition can sometimes lead to urinary incontinence. This means that the patient is experiencing an involuntary loss of urine. Some people refer to the overactive bladder as urge incontinence.

However, that would be wrong. You see, patients with urgency incontinence, they always experience an involuntary loss of urine. Those with overactive bladder do not necessarily mean that they would necessarily leak urine despite feeling the sudden urge to urinate.

Overactive bladder is a condition that affects as much as 33 million American adults. Research has also shown that this is a more common problem found in women as compared to men.

Doctors refer to the overactive bladder symptoms as quite unpredictable, and that is true. The majority of the symptoms are limiting, thus affecting the patients everyday life and activities. We see many patients deal with mental distress due to the presence of OAB symptoms.

Usually, the first symptom that the patient asks for help with is urinary incontinence. We all have experienced urinary urgency at some point in our lives. Usually, laughing is the most common cause for the occasional incontinence. However, an overactive bladder is causing this symptom daily. OAB can also cause stress incontinence.

  • Excessive fluid intake
  • Common bladder irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, etc.

Fact Or Myth: Utis Can Be Treated With Essential Oils

Essential oils can be used to both support healing and make you feel better when you have a UTI. You dont want to use them in place of a drug, Chesla says. But essential oils are uniquely helpful because chemical constituents within the aromatic oils create physiological responses in the body, and because theres a direct connection with the sense of smell and the limbic system in the brain, where your emotions arise, she says.

Essential oils have not been scientifically studied for UTIs. However, some small studies have shown they can help battle other types of bacterial infections. For example, a review published in December 2019 in Complementary Therapies in Medicine on topical aromatherapy for the skin infection MRSA found significantly lower level of new MRSA emergence compared to routine care.

Copaiba takes care of dogs and people. My 70 pound yellow lab was spayed and 6 months later became incontinent. Proin is the drug of choice for vets but causes liver/kidney damage over time. She is only 3 years old. She needed two 50 mg pills twice per day to control it. After reading Dr. Sheldon’s book on pets I decided to very slowly wean her off the medication using Copaiba. It has worked!

Here is the protocol we used:

* 1 drop of Copaiba to her food am and pm* 2 weeks later we reduced her meds by 1/4* 2 weeks later we reduced her meds by 1/4 again and so on.

She was down to 1/4 pill per day and ingesting 1 drop of Copaiba 2x per day. We tried to take her off completely but she started to drip. We just upped the Copaiba to 4 drops per day and will try again in a month. For people, using 2 drops 2 times a day has worked well for my friends.

How Can Essential Oils Treat A Yeast Infection

Many essential oils have antibacterial, antiviral, or anti-fungal properties and are received by the body just like any nutrient consumed in your food. Used topically, they are absorbed by the skin and can penetrate cell walls within 20-30 minutes after application, even affecting cells which have been damaged or hardened in harsh conditions.

Since essential oils are very concentrated, youll usually need to dilute the oil before application in order to avoid irritating an already sensitive area of your skin. Be sure that you understand how to use each type of oil, as some are safe to use topically, but can be poisonous if swallowed. Even oils that come from edible herbs, such as rosemary, can be toxic if ingested in the form of a concentrated essential oil. Keep your oils out of reach of children and check with your doctor prior to use if you are pregnant.

Also keep in mind that not all essential oils are created equally. Although most essential oils sold in stores smell just as strong as their competitors, youll need to do your research in order to get high quality oils if you intend to use them for medicinal purposes. Depending on the manufacturer and distillation process, the medicinal properties of the plant may or may not have carried through to the oil sold on the shelf. Likewise, the oils may have been mixed with other compounds or synthetic chemicals, which can change an oils effectiveness at treating wounds or infections.
