Womens Center For Bladder And Pelvic Health
The Womens Center for Bladder and Pelvic Health at Magee is a multidisciplinary resource with a comprehensive, women-centered approach.
Women of all ages and races can suffer from bladder and pelvic floor disorders. The pelvic floor is a combination of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that support the pelvic organs the bladder, vagina, uterus, and rectum. The pelvic floor can be weakened by a combination of factors such as childbirth, heavy lifting, the effects of menopause and aging, and other chronic medical and neurologic conditions.
Although problems do become more common with advancing age, even young women can be affected.
For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact the Women’s Center for Bladder and Pelvic Health at 412-641-7850.
Reasons To Visit Our Center
Referrals to the center can be made through a patients primary care physician or gynecologist. Many women self-refer, so a physician’s referral is not necessary.
Some of the symptoms women experience can include:
- Leaking of urine or stool
- Difficulty with bowel movements
- Pelvic pain or pressure
Pelvic floor disorders significantly compromise the quality of womens lives, which may result in depression, social isolation, and avoidance of physical and sexual activity due to discomfort and embarrassment. Our experts are dedicated to improving the quality of our patients’ lives.

Ou Clinic Focuses On Female Sexual Health

Women also have treatment options but fewer medical professionals in whom they can confide doctors who are specialists in the myriad causes of difficulty before, during and after intercourse.
OU Physicians is working to change that. Within the past two months, the state’s largest doctors group has begun the only clinic in Oklahoma, Kansas, North Texas and Western Arkansas that deals exclusively and comprehensively with women’s sexual health.
The Sexual Dysfunction Clinic’s care team includes three urogynecologists, a physical therapist, a physician’s assistant and a clinical psychologist. It draws other OU Physicians doctors as needed.
“We have a very, very, very global approach, Dr. Spyros Marinis, the center’s director, said of treatment and diagnostic methods.
The Greek-educated physician commonly sees women who report pain during sex. But tracking the cause of pain is a challenge.
“You don’t have to suffer in silence, said Marinis, who joined OU Physicians’ Women’s Pelvic & Bladder Health after completing a fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
“The problem is not going to be identified by a general practitioner because they aren’t going to ask, he said.
A 1999 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported 43 percent of 1,749 women surveyed had some form of sexual dysfunction.
And female sexual dysfunction often is largely psychological, Marinis said.

Emily Swafford Pt Prpc
Emily began practicing physical therapy in 2000 after earning her degree from The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in downtown Oklahoma City. She began specializing in pelvic health rehabilitation in 2008 when she began her current position at OU Physicians Womens Pelvic & Bladder Health Clinic. The urogynecology clinic where she enjoys working has earned recognition as a National Center of Excellence for Incontinence where she works closely with physicians and mid-level providers.
She is frequently asked why she chose to specialize in pelvic health rehabilitation. Upon being introduced to the different specialties available in physical therapy practice while in physical therapy school, she became instanteously fascinated with pelvic health rehabilitation. She has a naturally curious mind and loves soaking in all the information she can learn about pelvic health by attending continuing education courses and keeping up with various publications. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family including her husband and three children.
