When And How Often Does A Puppy Need To Go To Toilet

Learn To Express A Dog’s Bladder In 3 Minutes!

The times a puppy needs to relieve themselves depends a lot upon when they last ate and drank, as well as recent activities and even their own little preferences.

Some puppies need to go immediately after eating or drinking, while others cannot go until a full half hour later.

What you can rely on though is that after eating or drinking, all puppies will need to go very shortly after.

As a general rule, all puppies should be taken to their bathroom spot:

  • First thing in the morning when you rise.
  • Just before the last person in the house goes to sleep.
  • Immediately after the puppy wakes up. This is after any nap, at any time of day.
  • Within the first half an hour after eating.
  • Within the first 15 minutes after drinking.
  • After play or experiencing any form of excitement such as a visitor saying hello.

And because, like us, puppies and dogs need to go often throughout a day, You also want to take them to their bathroom spot on a schedule such as the following:

  • 8 weeks old take them to their bathroom spot every 30 minutes.
  • 10 weeks old take them to their bathroom spot every 45 minutes.
  • 3 months old take them to their bathroom spot every 1 to 1.5hrs.
  • 4 months old take them to their bathroom spot every 2hrs or so.
  • 5 months old take them to their bathroom spot every 3 hours.

The above times are approximate, and they have to be because as I repeatedly say ) every puppy is unique and will have their own pattern.

Important Notes On Crate Training

A young puppy should never be crated for more than a couple of hours, except overnight. Your puppy might not be able to hold it very long. If theyre crated for too long, they may start pottying in the crate out of desperation. Keep crate time to a couple of hours or less, except at night. Listen for I need to potty barks or whines in the middle of the night, too, so you can give your puppy an overnight potty break whenever necessary.

Make Sure Your Pup Is Ready For Sleep

House Training A Puppy Understand Your Pet

If your pup is exhausted from playtime and running around before putting him in his puppy crate, this will make him less likely to wake up every hour or so, and immediately relieve his small bladder. When training a puppy, try and make sure that he is ready for a good, long snooze, and really tire him out before bedtime. He will be so pooped that hell be more likely to sleep right through the night, making a more fulfilling day for him, and a pee-free night for you! How Do I Toilet Train My Dog

Toilet training your puppy should be quite a simple process, as long as you make the time and investment to get into a good routine.Initially, you will have to build your routine around your puppy’s needs, and these are reliably predictable when they are very young.

You may find it useful to keep a record of when your puppy eats sleeps, urinates and defecates. A simple diary list will do. Repeat cue words like ‘wee wees’ and ‘poo poos’ or ‘be busy’ and ‘be clean’ while the puppy is actually urinating or defecating. Use different words for each action so that you will be able to prompt the puppy later on.

Puppies need to urinate immediately after waking up, so you need to be there to take your puppy straight into the garden without any delay.Eating its meal stimulates its digestive system, and puppies normally urinate within fifteen minutes of eating, and defecate within half an hour of eating .Puppies have very poor bladder control, and need to urinate at least every hour or two. They can urinate spontaneously when they get excited, so take your puppy out frequently if it has been active, playing or exploring.

Always go with your puppy into the garden so you are there to reward and attach the cue words to the successful actions. Fortunately, puppies are creatures of habit, so as long as you introduce the garden to your puppy as its toilet area early on, you should be able to avoid most of the common pitfalls.

Invest In Stain Remover

Effectively removing the urine in this situation comes down to using an enzymatic pet stain remover. You will usually be able to locate this in a pet supply shop or your grocery store’s cleaning supply section.

However, it’s important that you check the product label before applying. It should be nontoxic and pet-safe.

You might be wondering how this works. With an enzymatic pet stain remover, the enzymes will break down the proteins and ammonia that are present in your pet’s urine. This works to neutralize the odour that accompanies the pee.

All you have to do is follow the bottle’s instructions. This type of cleaner usually won’t require you to rinse and should be safe to utilize on carpets, wood floors, and other surfaces that are porous and where odour gets stuck.

If you have tried all of the cleaning methods mentioned and still, your dog is urinating in the same spot, and the scent is present, it’s time to take the next step to get your carpet clean.

You might have to get professional carpet cleaning to remove the scent. You can either decide to have professionals help you with this, or you can attempt to tackle it yourself with a carpet shampooer you can rent.

You might also be wondering what is leading your dog to engage in this behaviour. Continue reading to learn more about if dogs pee out of spite. The reason that your dog is actually urinating inside the house might surprise you!

Clean Up Accidents Right Away

Accidents happen, even if youre the best dog parent in the world. Its important that you clean these up quickly and thoroughly so your puppy doesnt feel drawn back to the same place by the smell of residual poop or urine.

Use a cleaning product that contains live bacteria or enzymes that break down the mess, rather than masking it with another fragrance.

You may want to try leaving some soiled towels in your puppys elimination station. The scent reinforces for your puppy that this is the potty area.

When Training Is Difficult

How Long Can your Dog SAFELY Hold Their Pee – Veterinarian Explains

If you find that your pup is having accidents in the house more than you would like, go back to square one. Get back on a strong schedule, make the space that your puppy has access to smaller. Make sure you have thoroughly cleaned all previously soiled areas. It is common for people to think the pup “gets it” and allow them too much access too soon. Just remember to go slow and if you think your pup is backsliding, don’t get frustrated, just go back to basics.

If your pup is routinely soiling in the crate, switch to a larger space as soon as possible. Dogs can sometimes lose the desire to keep the sleeping place clean and this can make them more difficult to potty train going forward. You can restore a puppys cleanliness instincts by giving it the choice of a clean crate with the door open, water bowl, and food bowl in one area and your preferred substrate in another area.

If house-training is not going well at all, reach out to your veterinarian and have your pup checked for urinary tract infections or other issues that maybe preventing it from being successful. Go over your routine with your vet and see if they can recommend any changes or a trainer that may be able to guide your further.

How To Train Dog To Hold Bladder

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how to train a dog to hold its bladder, as the approach you take will vary depending on your dogs individual personality and needs. However, some tips on how to train a dog to hold its bladder include gradually increasing the time between potty breaks, rewarding your dog for successful bladder control, and using positive reinforcement to help your dog associate urinating with good things like treats or playtime.

Start To Expand Your Dog’s Zone

When your dog can go at least five days without an accident in their area, it’s time to make it a bit bigger! Don’t add too much space too fast. If you’ve been using their crate, add an exercise pen around their crate before allowing them more room to roam. Use baby gates and exercise pen panels to block off areas as needed as you allow them the freedom to roam part or all of a particular room. Here’s a picture example of a beginning “dog zone” using an exercise pen around a crate:

If your dog has an accident in their designated area, clean it thoroughly, and go back to a smaller-sized area where they were previously successful. If not cleaned properly, your dog may use the same spot again because of the smell.

Since teaching your dog to pee in one spot is rarely foolproof , you might as well get the exercise and take your dog around the block.

How To House Train Your Puppy Without Using Pee Pads

This method is the one-and-done way to train your puppy not to pee in the house! The advantages are that the way you train stays the same all the way through no moving pads around and that you dont have to buy lots of puppy pads. The disadvantage is that any little accidents go directly onto your floor/carpet/whatever else little Fido happens to be sitting on at the time, and you do have to get yourself and your canine companion outside at all hours, whatever the weather.

Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Take your puppy out to the garden as soon as they wake up, straight after a meal or vigorous play, and every one/two/three hours depending on their age. The idea is to get them outside before they have to pee!
  • When they go to the toilet outside, give them lots of praise and healthy treats so they know they have done well, and to encourage them to go outside next time they need to do it! Do this even if they were already outside, for example during a walk.
  • If you catch your puppy mid-pee and they arent where they should be, pick them up gently they should stop peeing and take them outside. When they finish their pee outside, more praise and treats!
  • Top tip: as with all training, keep the treats on hand. You need to reward behaviour as it is happening, and not a moment later particularly in puppies so running to the cupboard or spending a minute rummaging in your pockets can lead to less effective results .

How Often Does An 8 Week Old Puppy Pee

For a 2 months old puppy I recommend taking him out after waking up, after eating, after playing, and every waking 20min regardless of the activity. At that age he cannot yet go for long period of time without needing bathroom breaks.

If your puppy plays for a long time, he might also need to be taken out during his playtime. It is a good idea to keep an eye on your watch or even set timers to help you stay on track.

Learn his cues: before he goes he will sniff the ground and start turning in a circle, that is when you pick him up and take him outside.
